I tried cleaning the dipstick but this persists. I frequently get oil showing above the half full point on only one side of the dipstick, even if I clean and redip it. how can this be possible?

Usually this is residue from the tube, you see this more often with transmission dip sticks especially just after filling the transmission. Can you see a bit of oil on the edge of the stick going up quite ways above the hatch area? Take the lower of the two readings. Or basically the lowest point of oil free stick.

You know 80’s are reliable when we have several threads going at the same time about the finer points of checking the oil.

Good point on oil threads - heh. Other makes have threads on slipping trannies, broken transfer cases and chronic electrical gremlins.

You'll get an oil residue from the dipstick tube if you try to check it several times. The BEST way to check oil IMHO is to open the hood and remove the dipstick after parking it for the night on level ground (garage, etc). In the morning, the dipstick tube is as clean as possible w/o the dipstick holding some oil in - any left has flowed into the oil pan. Then, you put the dipstick in and remove it and you'll get a single accurate reading. Do it again, and the oil you dragged up from the oil pan progressively clouds the reading with each successive attempt.

What about the effect of engine temp on the reading? My truck reads different when cold vs when it has been driven for a long while. It may read a quarter to a half inch down on the dip stick cold and then at the full mark or slightly higher when hot.

Thanks

Andrew

I estimate that to be on the order of a quart difference and I cannot speak to it. I'd expect oil to be fairly thermally stable in terms of its volume - dunno?

Sem, did you mean that you only see oil on one side?
If so, seen same here. Attributed that to the oil rubbed off from contact with the tube when the stick is removed

yes, that's what I mean. I get it the first time I check the oil as well as on a doubledip. I guess it probably has something to do with the shape of the bottom of the tube. I will obey the lower reading.

Is this ATF stick or motor oil stick? I have this problem with my ATF stick, but not the oil stick. My oil stick is of "round cable" type, not the thin metal type like the ATF stick.

Medtro this sounds goofy, but could you post a pick of your dipstick? That round dipstick sounds like it might be the way to go.

Yep thats the one and same method to check the tire pressure. After long period time or morning time to get real accurate reading.

What!?! No picture of the oil dipstick on a truck you don't own?

I am disappointed! :flipoff2:

The oil is not as stable as you think. The heat can increase volume by almost 3/4 of a quart in a 1FZ oil engine. I only check my oil at the gas station I get oil from. I get out, put the card in the machine, put hose in filler then pop the hood and check the oil. This gets me the best reading I can get. I usually check every time I pump gas mostly for some thing to do and to make sure everything is ok under the hood. later robbie

Thanks for the info Robbie. My other Toyota veichle does not seem to change much hot to cold but my cruiser seems to change a lot. I was concered with over filling it while cold.

Thanks

Sorry for taking such a long time to do this.

medtro what year and is it US spec or international? From the shape and printing of the yellow handle it looks similar to the one in my 96 so I am assuming it is OEM but mine has a flat sheet metal stick with engraved markings. I like the forged hatching area on that one, looks like it would be easier to read in low light.

also un-like the flat one it probably does not have to be clocked right to insert into the tube (sheet metal only bends one way)
