I notice that the oil pressure on my 83 60 goes 3/4 up on the gauge in idle, is that normal?

Factory.

Try a mechnical one with numbers. The resistor in the sensor may be going bad or you make have a bad electrical connection in you wiring somewhere. If you experience the same problem with a mechanical then you will be asked what oil filter you are runnning, etc.

I hooked up a mechanical one and used it for a few days which showed good and now I know what is normal on my factory gauge which shows alittle low and more fluctuations.

my factory gauge always show about 3/4 regardless of rpm unless the engine is turned off. I've never put another gauge on it to see what it's really reading. however, my truck runs fine and has 205K miles on the odometer.

I don't know much about the FJ senders, but I do know the HJ senders often give trouble.

My '87 HJ61 was showing very low pressure on the factory gauge but tempoarily fitting a mech gauge proved there was plenty of pressure.

I pulled the sender apart (it was a fairly new one) and there was a broken wire inside.
There is a wire wound resistor in there and on one end the wire was broken.
I attempted to solder the break and managed to sorta kinda almost stick it back together.
I think it may be some sort of aluminium wire as it is quite brittle and solder does not want to stick to it.
Like I said it sorta stuck so I put it back together and it worked.
That was quite a while ago and the gauge is still working fine.
A mechanical gauge fitting is really a good idea for these vehicles I reckon.

LOL!

I don't know what island you live on but a new sending unit costs around $5 here.

The wiring for the sending unit in an FJ60 goes the long way around the wiring harness. That is why most people put in a mechanical.

Huh?

I've already said that I think it is a good idea to fit a mechanical gauge, and down here on the "island", I can tell you that there is very little chance of buying a new oil pressure sender for a diesel cruiser for anywhere near 5 bucks.
If I could have bought a new one for that price I certainly would not have been trying to fix the broken one.

I personally hate mechanical oil gauges. Nothing like having oil leak INSIDE the rig. And yes, it is possible to be broken down due to oil gauge issues. Luckily, it wasn't me but it convinced me that I'm not going that route.

Ah, I missed the diesel part. They must be different.

I've just noticed mine going up and pegging out at the top end after I've been driving for about 30 minutes. Does that mean the sending unit is bad? Normally, it was reading about 1/4 at idle and 1/2 on the road.

Checked with my mechanic and said the gauge and the sending unit are fine, so I guess it is normal to be in the 3/4 range.

Just on the last trip mine started acting weird to I parked it and havent had a chance to check it out but when driving it drops almost to the bottom then when idling comes up to a quarter, very strange. plenty of oil in the truck. Whats this about the oil filter? the oil was changed about 1500 miles ago.
