I have never heard of cleaning it. Contact one of the mud vendors for a replacement... Cdan or Sam lowe come to mind

I was having some issues with my oil pressure sender, it was reading very low or not at all. I cleaned the contacts and Wiring with brake parts cleaner or (something similar) and now it reads high, like maxed out all the time.

Its definitely worth a shot.

I've found new ones ranging from $18-$65...is there really that big of a difference in quality of new ones?!?! Hence the reasoning for just wanting to clean it, lol.

Clean the contacts, Duh! I didn't think about that. I replaced the oil pump (OEM) and have been worried about oil pressure (like I screwed something up, I know, it's easy, but you don't understand my innate ability to make mistakes). I'm going to clean my nasty, oily, crappy, connections and see if oil pressure goes up. Beats pulling off oil pan to check oil pump connections.

My stock gauge reads about 1/3 at idle and 2/3 at higher RPMs when just warming up. After warm & on highway, seems to stay a tad above 1/2. Concerning?

I've looked at the lifters via oil cap while running and it's a little oily, but not squirting out the top or flinging oil everywhere like I hoped/figured it would.

Putting in rebuilt engine....sensor worked fine from previous engine....was just wondering if I could clean it out and re-use it.....that's all I was asking. But if this isn't an option, then is there a major difference in the $64 sensor over the $18 sensor if I replace it?

You may want to see if you can get a mechanical OP gauge and fit it where the OP sensor is. FSM spec (for the '96 LC) is 60 psi at 3K rpm. This will tell you if you have good OP, then you can deal with either a new sensor or use your old one.

It is not unusual for these engines to run at the halfway mark on the dash gauge when warmed up and traveling down the freeway. Been using Delo 15-40 and that keeps the gauge up over the half mark on the freeway.

Use the OEM sensor only, best bet for quality. Good luck with it.

Get a gauge - NOT THAT EASY!

Quick comment on "get a gauge". I tried this a while back. My neighbor had a gauge, so all I had to do it get a fitting to go in the oil sensor spot. NO LUCK! I called ALL Autoparts places in the St. Louis area and nobody had the adapter. IIRC it was ~$10. From what I can tell, all gauge fittings are SAE, not metric.

Factory Gauge position: Thanks for the feedback. Mine is a 92 3FE. Oil pressure gauge looks the same as before, so I'll figure I'm good. Still gonna clean sensor contacts FTHOI (For The Hell Of It).

Removing oil pressure sender

How do you get the oil pressure sender off?
My harness came a part, so I got a new harness. but looking at the sender, it is pretty rusted and the spade is corroded. how do you spin (unscrew) it out of the engine?
Related question - does it sit above the oil level?

Once the sender is out and in your hands take the sender to your parts store match up the threads, buy the fitting and or a "T" fitting if you want both sender and mechanical gauge to function.

These are brass fittings and close is good enough, sometimes the first bite is a B but once started it's easy.

Many times the problem is in the dash as well(search)

It's plumbed into the main oil gallery so there is oil behind it. You'll get some dribblence when you take it apart. About the same amount you'd get pulling an oil filter out, as that is plumbed into the same main oil gallery.

The senders often get destroyed upon removal. I use channel lock pliers if I can reach it. They're not usually in that tight though.

Holy thread resurrection Batman!!

I'm having a similar issue--new to me '91 LC. Oil gauge starts at zero when cold, bumps up to the first line when started and then stays there no matter how warm the engine, how much load, etc. When I pull the oil fill cap while running, it's pretty dry--and looking down at the rocker arms it's not like I see a lot of oil moving around--I can even stick my finger down the hole and not get hardly any oil on it. By comparison, my '92 starts out at zero, and quickly climbs to the 2/3 mark. When I pull the oil fill cap it's definitely "wetter." I guess I'll start by switching senders and see where that gets me, then again that might get me two broken senders....I guess checking the OP with another gauge is the best way to go.....

About to replace my sender; is there any trick to disconnecting the plugs attached to the existing one? I've never seen them (below the manifold) so can't picture what I need to be pinching or pulling.

I've been heading out west to Colorado and Utah and during this trip my gauge has been increasing from 2/3 of the reading to almost to the "H". I turned off the ignition to look at the Land Cruiser Museum for a couple of hours and came out to turn the key to only the IGN position without starting it and it showed pressure. Believing this maybe a sensor problem call Mark Miller Toyota in Salt Lake and they had one in stock. Will be installing tomorrow before I head out to FJ Summit.

Could also likely be the GAUGE itself, as they are known for horrible calibration. Do a search for Oil Pressure Gauge and you should find a few threads detailing fixes and modifications.

I am in the process of gathering parts to install a mechanical gauge so I don't rely on the accuracy of a poor "idiot light" gauge.

Nothing of value to add on the topic, but rumor has it SFUWO is badass.
