Morning All.

Seem to be having issues with my oil pressure gauge that I cant figure out. My gauge was working fine and usually shows the needle on the left quarter of the gauge consistently regardless of how hot or cold it's running, now the needle is pegged on the right side immediately at startup. When I remove the wire from the oil pressure sending unit the needle drops back left to nothing. My brain hurts from all the threads I've gone thru and the only thing I've come up with is possibly replacing the sending unit with a new one. Side note the wire that runs to the sender on the motor has a second wire just hanging out not attached to anything. My sending unit has only one connection in the middle, no spot for a second wire. Thanks in advance for the advice.

Hi Kelly,

I think I'd replace the sender. There is a test method for the sender that I'll look for and add here. I don't know what the unconnected wire is for, but perhaps something unrelated (like the bypass wire to the starter). Perhaps you can take a photo? What's the color of the unconnected wire?

Just for curiosity, check that the terminal of the sender is not shorted to ground (zero resistance) all the time (with the engine not running).

It does sound as if the sender contacts are stuck closed.

and after installing the new sender, make sure you connect the wire to the center lug, not the spade terminal, if you use the spade terminal you'll be replacing your gauge next.

I used matt's repair kit above to replace my worn connector that would not stay on my sender. Really liked the product, first rate quality.
