Time for the first oil change, so I'm going to replace a weapy oil pan gasket, obligatory for a new old vehicle in my book. I'm sure this is straightforward, but anything I should consider? Should I check or do anything while I have the pan off?

Thanks,

Look for metal filings in the pan, otherwise your good to slop on some new gasket sealer(I term slop on as a joke) and reinstall.

Funny thing is I was concerned when I first installed a 3B oil pan and wanted to use the cork style gasket which hardens and fails. Even toyota today mostly uses gasket in a tube.

Plus you may want to turn the rod bolts with your fingers to make sure they are tight.

Thanks Rob, but...

So I should just use Form-A-Gasket or something and not bother ordering the $15 3B oil pan gasket??

Should I re-torque them?

I used the cork gasket on my oil pan this summer. 15,000kM later there are still NO leaks.

Oh darn, I was just playing on the feeling the bolts with your fingers thingy.

They did that 20 years ago when I started in a pulp mill, told some poor flat lander kid to feel the bolts on the digester every night. The bolts were darn near 6 inches across, of course he was fresh and they worked him over.

You should be good as gold after that gasket replacement, only other weeping gasket is that nasty one under the exhaust manifold.

I suspect if you are changing it out and thier are no tolerance issues that require a cork gasket, you may choose silicone.

On the rear ends I was told when you remove the 3rd, replace the cork with cork, this is a built in tolerance.

LOL I thought finger tight was a little suspect. Good one on the noob :)

Thanks everybody, I think I got this covered.

Toyota FIPG # 00295-00103. I hear the mechanics are required to use it for any warrenty repair work. They have another FIPG they use for "regular" work. I used the 00103 a few weeks back on my leaky 60 on the oil pan and side cover. That, and with the front main seal replaced I am drip free!

if you have ot already pulled the pan off then i would tighten the pan bolts 1/2 turn each and see if that solves your problem unless of course you are going inside for another reason...
a lot cleaner and i have seen good results in doing so...
