Looking for ideas on where this darn oil is coming from and hope some of you might have some ideas. After riding today I found oil on my garage floor. I lifted the hood and inspected the pcv valve. It seems secure on the grommet and you can blow air through the pcv.

There oil on the inside of the hood, the back of the firewall, inside the battery box and oil has leaked onto the leaf srpings. The valve cover gasket seems well sealed. There is no oil on the drivers side of the engine compartment.

Anyone experience this before? Any thoughts......thanks for the input.

Perhaps you blew out the hole in the head (between the 4th and 5th spark plugs, roughly, I think) that is a drill hole for the passage to the rocker arms. It is ordinarily plugged with a pressed in plug. Most people tap and screw it, or it can be plugged again and pinned.

Maybe not, but that's my guess. How much oil do you have left in the pan?

Here is a picture of Marshall's being tapped.

Also realize that the fan will spread a little leak all over the place. I traced a similar thing down to a tiny PCV leak and the fan distributing it all over the engine bay. Fixed it, cleaned it up and it's still perfect today... hth..

Not sure about the pan but I checked and its not the freeze plug. I'll check the pan next weekend....this week's shot due to work schedule. Will also check for leaks around the PCV.

Thanks for the input

Do you change your own oil?

Make sure that there is only one oil filter gasket on the filter base.

Sometimes when removing the oil filer, the gasket will stay stuck to the oil filter base. This will prevent the new oil filter gasket from sealing properly and can create this very issue.

Fuel pump gasket? I replaced my fuel pump and after a few months found the pump wiggled itself loose so I used lock-tite on the bolts and now all is fine.

Good Luck!

I had exactly the same problem. After beating my head against the wall for several weeks and eliminating all the usual suspects, the problem turned out to be a defective fuel pump. Apparently the diaphragm had ruptured and oil was spraying out the weep hole at higher rpm. At cruising speeds, the fan would blow oil all over the PS of the engine bay. I replaced the fuel pump, and no more leaks.

Thanks. I'll check out the fuel pump and let you know if it resolves the problem.

Can you visibly see the leaking while the engine is running????

Yes, and it's an understatement to call it a leak because the oil blows out with considerable force at higher rpm. I'd suggest cleaning off the PS of the engine bay with degreaser, then idle your engine to operating temp. When it's warm, rev it to ~2000 rpm and observe the weep hole. If the fuel pump happens to be your problem, you'll be able to easily see oil coming out. I could see it from the top (looking down at the pump) and through the wheel well.

If it does turn out to be the fuel pump, don't forgot to change your oil after replacing the pump. If the oil got into the pump, then gas got into your oil. Thin oil = engine wear.

replaced the oil filter today and there was only one gasket. Thanks for the idea.

Thin oil is right....it was like water. I replaced the oil and a new fuel pump but now I"m having problems starting. Everything is hooked up correctly and I don't see any fuel leaking.....any ideas?

Thanks

Maybe the carb is dry? Try priming it with a little gas, or carb cleaner, or a couple of squirts of starting fluid.

Turned out my son disconnected the coil wiring when we were removing the battery to get to the fuel pump. I found it by isolating the fuel lines at both ends of the new fuel pump. Fuel was being delivered to the carb and there was plenty of pressure so I had to look for an electrical issue somewhere else in the system.
........However.........I still have the oil leak and I'm at wits end. Today I'm going to replace the rocker cover gasket and then spray off all of the places where I think the leak might be with degreaser and/or brake cleaner then bring the car up to operating temp and see what I can see. (probably should have done this in the first place but I enjoyed the time working on the FJ and the fuel pump was an easy fix

Thanks for the input.
