After some research here I purchased the filter in the attached photo. Is this the correct one for my 94? I have been using the Fram Ultra Guard. They are quite a bit larger. What is the difference between Fram and Toyota.

Quality. Factory filter is a better quality filter. Several threads on this and the horrors associated with some wix malfunctions

The LC used at least 2 different filters. 1 big(tg8 fram sized) and one smaller.

There's hundreds of pages arguing about filters, Stay away from the ghetto cheap ones and you should be good.

Do not put Fram or Wix or any other cheaper filters on your cruiser. Not worth a few $ saved for the risk of a spun bearing or a totally cooked engine. Not much scientific about this but I think that I get cold start oil pressure faster with a genuine filter.

Differences:

One is made by Fram.

One is made by Toyota.

One is large.

One is small.

One is black.

One is orange.

Those are just the obvious differences.

That is one of the Toyota filters you can use. The old large Toyota one is 15600-41010. The 90915-YZZD3 seems easier to find in bulk (~$5 each in a case, shipped) since it has been used in many more modern Toyotas (Seqiuoa, 100 series, FJ Cruiser, 4runner, Tundra, Tacoma).

BLT4ME thanks for the obvious. I was looking for internal differences such as the different material types. Just trying to learn as I go.

Everyone has their opinions.

Do a search here for WIX filters. I used to be a fan of those.

I wouldn't install a Fram on my LC EVER.

Now I (and many others) use nothing but what you have shown above.

Fram sucks.
Wix sucks (for the model that fits these)
Toyota is factory made for these. Then you get into the Japan made ones VS Thailand, VS others. Beno can answer those questions, but it depends on how important it is to you and how much you want to spend.

How's that for differences?

Search, man!

@cruisersurf - just use the Toyota one. I switched to the small Toyota one after reading some horrifying stores on here about WIX failures and haven't looked back.

Two things I noticed on the Toyota filter that I liked:

  • The filter comes with a plastic seal to keep dirt out of it before installation
  • The filter O ring comes pre lubed

After a google search of to find the difference. And for future reference of others the difference is in the fiber density of the interior material along with the number of pleats of material. Also the Factory filter will have more openings in the metal liner for better flow. I did also learn that there are counterfeit Toyota filters that have the same look and packaging as Toyota. Is anyone else aware of this? If so how are you able to tell the counterfeit products?

From my experience fram has flat gaskets which i think are inferior to the o-ring style as they are less likely to get stuck to the block. Second is the internal one-way valve, fram valves leak very badly, have not experienced flowback or leaking on the Toyota ones. I can't speak to anything else about them.

You can’t easily tell. But ideally you buy genuine parts from a genuine parts supplier like a Toyota dealer. and then you don’t have to ask any of these questions since the filter is a genuine one made for your vehicle and engine.

It’s really simple.

Buy the genuine Toyota filters a case at a time through Beno or one of the site sponsors and live happily ever after.

By the case, Toyota filters are what, about $2 more than Fram filters? Delivered to your door.

Walmart will deliver oil to your door and you’re good to go.

A good (not the best) cellulose media type filter that seems to be well constructed. It’s priced well and extremely easy to source.
