After fitting a mech oil gauge to check the pressure I've noticed, especially when the truck has been parked overnight, that the oil drains partially back down the tube into the sump and presumably from the rest of the oil galleries also.I thought there was some sort of valve in the pump to prevent this?
On cold startup there's 3-4 second timelag before pressure registers on the gauge. Is this normal? Using 10w40oil.Pressure hot & cold is fine once running.

I dunno if it is normal but mine does it too, I found running 0W rotella in the colder wheater helps the gauge register pressure faster in the cold.

yep , my mech guage does the same thing, I hooked up a mech guage in my 42 and then with a bit of wire jiggling the old electric one started working again, it always comes up to pressure pretty much instantly, whereas the mech guage has a bit of a wait.

I'd have been worried too if I hadn't seen the reaction of the old stock guage in comparison...
cheers,

did you bleed your line which goes to the gauge ?....air is compressable ...oil is not...this is why there is a delay in your oil press. gauge indication....the oil is compressing the air before you get a deflection on your gauge.
start your engine and crack the line going into the back of the gauge and bleed it till you see no more air in the line . It will stay in the line when you shut down also , your gauge will deflect faster in all ways...even when just reving the engine.

I thought the same thing, but it didn't make any difference for me, I dunno.

cheers
