I recently bought my 1997 FZJ80. It has 148000 miles and new valve cover gasket. Consuming approx. 1 quart of oil per 1000 miles using Rotella 15W40. Tried Castrol high mileage 5W30 and consumed 1 quart way before the 1000 mile mark. No leaks on driveway and no smoke at start-up. What is up with the oil consumption??

Yeah I'd expect a thinner oil to disappear quicker. You sure it isn't leaking somewhere and just burning off? Have you pulled the plugs?

You can always add a bit of dye to the oil and see where it is going.

And welcome!

My '94 had a similar oil usage problem, corrected after I installed a rebuilt head... I still have a rear main seal oil leak but guess that it's small enough to not notice a difference in oil level for the past 6k miles.

replace the pcv

I get no noticeable consumption. Even after 6800mi on the oil, It still reads in the high area of the dipstick. I haven't added any "makeup" oil since back in 07.

Mine uses a quart about every 2500 miles. It's now at 243,xxx miles. I run Pennzoil 5W30 year 'round. Change it every 3,000 miles.

my 92 is performing stong with 160k on the clock. No oil consumption at all which is surprising to me

i had about 1 qt/1000 miles going through my truck. then I had Slee replace the oil pump seal, the distributor o-ring seal, the valve cover seal, the PCV valve on the top of the engine, change the plugs, wires, cap, dizzy, and now I do not have noticeable oil consumption.

even if you don't have leakage, there is probably some spot where it's getting away...

Its most likely leaky valves. Totally normal, like others said just keep it topped off and you'll be fine.
