RESOLVED:

Hi everyone,

I attempted my own oil change on my 2008 LC today, and I'm afraid I've really messed something up. I've changed my own oil dozens of times, but this was my first time doing it on the cruiser. I drained the oil and replaced the plug, removed the oil filter, and then replaced the oil and oil filter with AMSOIL 5W-30 signature series and respective filter. I made sure to torque down the oil filter housing and drain plug to spec.

I then started the truck and heard a little thud under the vehicle, so I immediately turned it off and went to look under the truck. The oil filter housing had popped off it's threads and was sitting in the oil drain pan. I reinstalled the oil filter, and made sure I tightened it above spec this time, but now the truck won't start. It sounds like a dead battery where you just hear rapid clicks from the engine bay and the headlights flash.

I'm pretty much at a loss here for what could have happened, and what I should do next. Any advice or ideas would be greatly appreciated. :)

Sorry, I can’t visualize how the oil filter housing could have just “popped off” if it was installed correctly. It’s threaded on several complete turns. If it actually popped off like you say, it mustn’t have had any threads actually engaged and it must have had the threads simply jammed against each other. I hope you double checked you installed it correctly the 2nd time.

It helps if you press into it as you turn it. And there is a big o-ring that should be replaced with a new one and very lightly lubbed with fresh oil before you screw the cap back on. Make sure this o-ring stays in place as you screw the cap on. If you sense too much friction as you’re screwing it on, stop and unscrew it and double check the o-ring hasn’t shifted out of place.

About the truck not starting after the oil change, that must be a coincidence and most likely unrelated. Clean and retighten the battery terminals and measure the voltage to make sure it’s properly charged (and charge it if a little low).

Very important to place O ring in proper location

Update: I wasn't thinking straight. The combination of me having the car door open while I was doing the oil change and me then turning the truck on and then immediately off again must have killed the battery. I hooked my jump starter up and it fired right up. As far as the oil housing goes, my thought is that when I torqued it down, I had an extension on my torque wrench and it must not have tightened down all the way.

Thanks for the quick help everyone!
