Auto or Manual, Steve? My Son is considering 2nd and 1st Gen 4Runners, too, if they are nearly stock in height, but he doesn't want a manual.

5 speed. my daughter bought it for her first ride, and could never get comfortable with the 5spd, so Ive been the driver. Tell you son to qualify for his "MAN CARD", he has to drive a 5 speed for at least 2 or 3 years. It's a right of passage.

His first truck was a '85 4runner with the 5 speed. He learned on it 3+ years ago. But it was lifted and had no airbags and his Mom let him drive her old GX470 after < a month with it. I think the bigger issues are the 2 doors, lack of cruise and the tailgates which always seem to be one big bump away from imploding.

"The car my parents gave me doesn't have cruise control and a tailgate that rattles." #firstworldproblems

drive her old GX470

I never have thought of GX470's as being old......newest vehicle in our driveway is 2007.....Perspective.

hehe, mine is driving our 2008 gx470, after many years of drivin either my wifes 98 dodge avenger, or the 97 lx450

Shed like something similar now too LOL

gx470 is such a nice vehicle at any age

Well he is buying it - I am just helping him look. He wants a Honda Element, but I'm trying to push him to a 4Runner. He may be regularly driving to Atlanta or Indiana, so I don't blame him a whole lot for wanting cruise.

I remember when my Dad brought home my first car, which I did not want, the 1976 Buick LeSabre and told me I owed him $150 for it (it had been used in a liquor store robbery).

This was 1987 I think - It was only 11 years old and it seemed like it was 40 years old. Of course compare it to a 1986 Honda Accord and it was older than it seemed, in looks. Compared to a 2006 4Runner vs a 2016 and the difference even seems worse :) Still can't believe it was only 10 years old and shot. I only wish it looked like this one:

The GX was a 2003 with 195K+ miles. Wish we still had it - just didn't feel right having our kid drive a Lexus to High School. I could make him a good deal on it now, but still more vehicle than he needs even if it is only "worth" ~$6K

Wife "upgraded" to a 2014 Prius as part of our business. Its been a great car and helped us to not pay as much personal taxes as we would have without it.

I've got a 1st gen 4r (1988) that I'll be posting for sale soon. Color is medium blue metallic, with black roof. Rust free body, 22re, lce header, magnaflow and dynomax exhaust, heavy duty springs with slightly cranked torsions up front, bilsteins all the way around. sr5 interior and gauges, OEM vinyl floor under the carpet. clarion dvd/nav head unit with kenwood speakers in the doors, and 6x9's in the factory location. doors have been insulated on outer door skin and inner door skin, and cargo area has been insulated as well. bedliner spray of some sort on the cargo floor as well. Windows are tinted all the way around, OEM chrome bumpers, Hella H4 headlight conversion with IPF harness, CSF brass radiator, oem hoses, tstat and rad cap, dist cap, rotor, and plug wires. new alt.

the not soo good:
Clearcoat is failing on the paint. Paint is 6 or 7 years old.
AC needs orings and a recharge (r12)
bfg long terrains are a bit long in the tooth (10.50x31's)
a little bit of timing chain rattle at startup, but its done that since I bought it 6 years ago.

Interested for niece....love to see pics! Price?

Google drive link to pics of the 4r. Have painted grilles for front speakers as well. front skid plate removed for pics, will be bolted on. Have the rest of the carpet to complete the front that will go with the truck. Mud price would be $6k.

Wow that is gorgeous, Steve.

I've seen in person. I did not pick over it like a potential buyer but it is a nice looking rig.

Amazing how dads force cars on us......my dad brought home this for me in 1984 to take to college my sophomore year after selling my sweet High School ride, a '73 Firebird (first car). I wanted a Honda Accord. 18 months later my girlfriend, now wife, totaled it in a pretty bad accident in which we both walked away from miraculously driving home (North from spring break just above Jacksonville. Rolled it 5-6 times thru median and landed in right lane of south bound traffic without getting hit! I then got my 1980 Honda Accord, the first of 5 I have owned!

Thanks Steve, where are you/truck located? Have passed info along to my bro in law

Yeah - this is the first car that I got to "use". Never was given a car, had to scrounge to buy my own. It was my pseudo BMW :)

Its not perfect, but it has served us well. It is a solid vehicle. Clearcoat was fine until last summer, when it finally started to lift. I spoke with the PO, and he was going to send the pics to his painter and ask what he thought happened. I am giving him first crack at buying it back, and need to follow up with him.

I was getting mid 20s on the highway for mpg, as long as I didnt have my foot in it.

My intent was to either rebuild the motor or swap in a new 22re, but I couldnt bear to pull out a running motor.

I'm in Greensboro, NC. PM me for contact info.
