I certainly agree that for $30/yr to cover you and your family you can't go wrong with a CALSTAR membership, and indeed I'm a member. But having thankfully never needed this service, I have a question about it. If an accident happens and you need to be helicoptered off the trail to a hospital, will it definitely be CALSTAR that responds? I know nothing about air ambulance services in Placer and El Dorado counties. Is CALSTAR the only game "in town?" Their web site says their South Lake Tahoe area 6 covers Northern CA and NV, so that's good. And I'll bet if Bruce and the other EMS team members have any control over things, they'll call in CALSTAR. But is there any way you could still get stuck with a big bill for air evac even if you do have CALSTAR?

Great question. The helicopters that typically come there are CalStar, and I believe it's called care or life flight. If they are not available, CHP has flown in and to the best of my knowledge there is no charge for that, but they only have a Paramedic on board vs. a RN.

The other major player in Northern California is REACH. I personnally have never seen them up on the trail, and I believe the closet one is out of Vacaville. They are not a reciprocating member of CalStar. So in that case, yes, you would be on the hook. But again. I have never seen them there, but it is a very slim possibility.

That being said, I personnaly have CalStar and Reach, but that is because I work in the Bay Area and live in the Sierra Foothills.

We don't have a partnership with them, but they do offer the same type of coverage. IIRC it is $65 for the household. You can find more info on their website here: http://reachair.com/membership/

I received a phone call from Caltrans and wanted to pass along their information. They are finally in the process of repaving Ice House Road, and for those that have joined us before, you know it is long overdue.

They are going to try to start later in the day on Thursday with the number of vehicles that we are expecting, but no promises.

What this means for you….. BE PATIENT. Expect up to 30 minute delays while they have 1 lane traffic controls with a pilot car. Please take this into consideration so you can plan to get to the trail head or Ice House Resort a little earlier. Heck it will give you more time to get to know the people you will be wheeling with.

Also, I have posted up before, but make sure you have your camp fire permits. They are required for propane stoves as well.

See everyone in just a few more days!

Eric

Hey Cruiserdrew,
Finally secured my technician HAM license this year (call sign is KK6TLA), do you have any details on the repeaters/frequencies you guys are using this year or is that a question for Rick? We'll miss you and Tom leading the Wagon Run this year, I'm sure Rick will do a great job too. Hope too see you guys on the trail.

We will be taking orders for shirts to be mailed out after the event.

Looking for Breakfast Run Participants

Hey Everyone, so I'm going on the Breakfast run on Wednesday morning. Trying to coordinate with other Breakfast Runners! Would love to exchange phone numbers and coordinate. Jenn an I are staying at one of the cabins Tuesday night at Ice House resort. Would love to meet up with some other Breakfast Runners Tuesday Night! :)

To those with a wagon.....

Who is planning on running w/o a front sway bar? I ran one last year and it did ok but I keep hearing about the mounting brackets possibly tearing off. I have a '94 so my ABS lines are not at risk of being taken out. My wagon will be full (4 adults, lots of gear) so I am concerned about stability and lean on side hill sections, but in theory removing the sway bar should help with that. Thoughts?

removing the sway bar should help

yes, it does....
make sure you remove it on flat ground though...any twist makes an easy 10 minute job get ugly. When you get the front pin/bolts out, you can reverse them on the way back in to make the job easier the next time. (flip the nuts to the other side). Watch out for the brake lines getting pinched.

Hi kris, sounds good. Jenn and I will be in a blue mini truck. We will be staying in one of the cabins. We will keep our eyes open for you! Looking forward to the trip! :)

There is no question in an 80. The front sway bar mounts will tear off and take out the brake lines. Definitely disconnect the front on the trail. The rear does not affect articulation, and I recommend you leave it connected.

I am installing the Phil's quick disconnect tomorrow...

We planned on getting there Tuesday night but work doesn't permit.
We'll leave Bay Area at 2am on Wednesday and we'll be there bright and early... I am on a white 80 with my uncle.

See you there...

John
