Well, spent yesterday getting the head off Dozer. Not too bad of a job, but a few of the d.s. head bolts took a $hitload of torque to remove - like cheater bar and gritting teeth lot. Gonna' try and get the oil galley plug done and get her over to the machine shop tomorrow. Here are a couple of crappy cell phone pics, but everything looked really good for combustion chambers that haven't seen the light of day since 1978. Gurus feel free to chime in if you see something suspect.

Looks good. what was the reason for doing this?? head gasket? valve job?

Pane cleans out combustion chambers pretty good so the more you run it the cleaner it will get.

Hey Al,
I wanted to get the head milled to up the compression and take advantage of the 'pane's ~110 octane. Hoping to get the power back up a bit, due to the inherent BTU loss . Plus, last I tested the compression I was getting ~120psi, so it was getting close to time for a valve job.

Next question, the spec for max head decking is .100 for this domed-piston 2F. I am debating on going ahead with the max vs .090 - so I'd have one more decking as an option. But since this thing gets less than 1k mi/yr, and heads are readily available on the used market... should I go ahead max to help get the compression up as much as possible?????

I just got mine back from T Hoff, today. $475 for the usual, plus new exhaust valves and all new guides/ seats. Ready to start putting it on tomorrow. Hopefully, all of these new gaskets will give it another 20 years on the road.

Why you reco to wait Marshall? I was thinking less chance of a shaving getting in the head that way.

This head has never been off the motor before. I bought the truck w/ 69k original miles in '95, so no worries there, but thanks for the advice. I'm thinking I'm going to go .090 - want as much compression as possible and should have one more decking in it for WAAAAAY down the road (hopefully).

I guess if you were going to tap it then it would be fine to go ahead and do that then wait to actually put the plug in. When they hot tank the head it usually causes the plug to come loose. I probably wouldn't chance putting a new plug in with sealant and expecting the sealant to be there after hot tanking. Also I usually just get the machine shop to tap and plug the head. Last time I had it done it was 10 dollars. Well worth it for me.

Head's at the machine shop. They are going to drill/tap/plug the oil galley for me. Block is prepped and Felpro gasket set is ordered. Decided to get .090 milled off.

More to come...

Head's back on and purring like a kitten. I just let her warm up to retorque the head bolts today. Tomorrow I'll be cleaning up the valve cover and taking her for a test drive. Hopefully a noticeable difference.

Nice...... Ramon did the MSD box help at all with the 2F motor??

Don't waste your money... I was pretty naive when I bought that thing circa 1996.

The red looks good. Jerry is fast becoming the resident powder coater. Jerry is your oven big enough for a block?
