I am looking for off road lights and I have a couple questions.

first, was it possible to get off road lights when purchased new and where would they have been mounted. my oem bumper has lots of holes on the top, i am not sure if it came that way or po's work. i have seen mounting bars, window frame mountings, bumpers. post pics if possible.

second, best source for lights

my rig is oem right now and i want to find lights that will fit its look.

I don't know about stock looking lights

but I'm afraid of the dark, and even with a mostly-stock cruiser, I wanted more lights. I have three low-end Hellas that I bought new off ebay for $75 including the wiring. They're mounted to a piece of 1" aluminum square tubing. It's light and strong. It is, in turn, mounted to the back bolts of the tow hooks, and wired in such a way that it can be removed completely without any trace; not a hole or a mark in a factory wire. They come on with the high beams and cannot be switched off otherwise; no dash wiring.

If you want reasonable lights without this much trouble, just get some Euro H4 bulbs for the headlights and some 80-120 bright white bulbs. They throw off a ton of light. The bulbs in all my lights are street legal for now. I got away with 80w in Euro housings for years. The top of the beam is very flat, so you can adjust it to just below the mirrors and it's not offensive to others.

I did drill one hole in the bottom of my bumper to mount the towing light plug, but it's on the bottom, and it's not a stock bumper anyway. See it?

Chris, I look at your site every couple weeks. I think I am looking for round lights, I think they look better. Sorry I haven't gotten you pics of 69. I will get to it one of these days. The 73' is great, I love it, but it needs a new wiring harness, lucky me found one in restoration quality. I will be putting in next week.
 
yes, Toyota had fog lights as OEM options, I really don't think many if any US cruisers got them. They are cool(and darn cute)....but dont put out much light, they are 35watt and use a bulb that is almost impossible to find.

Mine are mounted on the bumper, but they were not ment to mount like this, they were suppose to use the bracket(seen above) I can't remember if I had to drill the bumper holes bigger or not, I think not.

you can also see the the holes in the stock bumper

IMOP the best thing you can do is upgrade you headlights to E-code with higher wattage bulbs. My favorites are the OEM Koito E codes......but you will never find them. Cibie's would be the best that you can find and are great lights.

the OEM Toyota(not OEM fj40) lights that MOT has are great and would look very good on a 40, they are more modern looking than the fj40 however and look more the part on a 60-100.

what would look correct for the 40 vintage are the old school KC Daylighter or similar.....but these are not the best lights. Perlux would also look vintage
 
After a few different setups, I found one that works:

80W-130W Euro H4 Headlights.
100W floods up high, where there most effective.
70W yellow spots down low.

everything is on relays, and works like a charm :D

mr_many, could you post some other views of your truck, I really like the setup and I'm thinking something simular on my truck...

Landpimp, when you say I will never find them what do you mean. Are they not available in the US? Or are not made anymore. I have a good friend who lives in Japan and is comming home over x-mas, would he be able to get the Koito E codes. I might be able to put an order together if anyone else wants any. My head lights are upgraded, but I like the look of driving/fog lights. The extra light I like too. It looks like both the headlights and auxillary lights have a yellow tint to them or is it the picutre? One last thing, are the little round rubber pads OEM on your bumper. I have never seen them before.
 
Just thought of something else, OEM auxillary ligth switch. What did you guys use? I have one empty spot on my dash just right of the instrument cluster in my 73. Or would they be wired some other way.

I got them right over the counter at the Toyota dealer here in Saudi. The cost for a complete ass'y as above in the schematic was $55.00 each and then they give a decent discount (as usual) for all "old stock".

They are nice units .... I haven't installed them for fear of someone ripping (or kicking) them off. My FJ has the wire harness ready to plug them in in place, and then there's a dash switch with an icon of a headlight beam that points downward, to turn them on.

I just goto a local truckers lighting supply store and get some lights there.
they usually un about $20 per each for a 100watt light.

Yo have to make a wiring harness with relays, but that's not so big of a deal IMHO.

I am running 100watts of floods and 200 watts of spot lights (300 watts of lighting total) on my 4Runner.
And I am into the lights, relays and wiring less than $100
 
Toyota couldn't verify the part number. They also said there would be a right and left. The $103 per light, but couldn't verify it was the same light.

Landpimp, where did you get your lights and do you have the US part #?

procomp 55 lights, Things I like:

Affordable
Narrow profile/Thin
Metal (which may not be so great if you live by the beach).
5" Diameter

130w H3 floods up top on confer brackets from a fellow cruiser (thanks again 66fj40x2 :D )
70w yellow spots down low.

don't like:

I like the looks of that Mr. Manny, takes some complication out as well, not having to work with a light bar (etc). Thanks for posting those other pics. That's a nice looking 40.
