i am in USA and we get shafted on the factory swing out tire carrier. i am interested in instaling one. i have heard that U.S. spec 80 serries need some reinforcment of the body panel. if this is true can someone show me where yours is reinforced? does anyone have one they aren't using?

thanks

Here only a few ones comes with this tire carrier .. let me take detailed pics of one of friend to know more about .. it .. interesting question ..

To me need to have some kind of reinforcement to handle this extra weight.

personally I would build or buy a rear bumper with the tire carrier. Hanging off the body work is going to harder. Adapting a 4runner one might work, but if it rattles it will drive ya nuts.

I have to move this thread, its more 80's stuff. But I will leave a redirect.

Why not just get the Kaymar tire carrier, looks like the oem.

It does not make economic or logistical sense to try to retro-fit one but that does not seem to stop us from doing other stuff to these things......;)

I notice on the TJM website they mention a tire carrier that mounts to the OEM bumber. No picture of course. I think theres looks the closet to OEM.

Also, there is a rig on here someplace that has a tire carrier mounted on the OEM bumper but I can't remember who.

thanks brown bear i just thought it would fit in the international section but it is gone or im blind

We used to have an international section. It got divided. We have a international chat area that is no holds barred.

But we are just diesel tech/24 volt. with importation questions.......

as well for now the 90 and 120s are stuck in there. As nobody knows what to do with the new age guys.

all hdj80, bj42, bj60 etc questions will go into the 80, 40, or 60 section unless engine related. Same goes to the 70 series. Only engine related questions will be posted. Or the dreaded 24 volt crowd ;)

I say if you got a international type question and it ain't really techy, post it in our newly formed internation clubhouse. :)

That one is in the Phx. area. I've seen it. He built a bracket inside the stock plastic bumper end and poked a hole in the plastic. Looks pretty clean. I've considered the idea. If I do I will post. Who knows...??

There really is no sense trying a body mount swing out carrier if it didn't come factory. The re-inforcement is inside the third pillar and I can't even see any signs of a weld in mine. There just isn't any way that sheet metal can hold up to the swing weight of a 35" tire without reinforcement and getting that in without a rattle will take some heavy duty skill. The bumper solution strikes me as the most reasonable solution for strength, durability and removeability if it comes out badly.

My vote is for CruiserDan's comment.

1990-1995 4Runners with swing-out tire carriers definately have extra reinforcement inside the body. I don't know how you'd get reinforcement in there, especially with the complex curves going on. 4Runners that did not come with the swing-out carrier do not have the reinforcement inside. I've looked into this, as my '90 4Runner does not have a carrier but there's no easy way to get a pre-made OEM reinforcement back in without cutting/hacking/welding that pillar and tail light area up. The tailgates are also a bit different on the 4Runners depending on if it has the gate or not so that the gate can latch properly and not block the license plate and backup lights.

It sounds like I will just have to “barrow” the rear tire carrier from Black & Tan. It is an awesome looking design but I was hoping the factory tire carrier was kind of “plug& play.”

Here is Black & Tan’s webpage for the carrier. I don’t know the user name but thanks for the idea and the good write-up.

I have the Kaymar tire carrier, got it from MAF. Real spendy, but it beats resting the spare on rocks and stuck in mud.
Don't mind the damage multipliers, they save my tailight lenses from runaway carts.

X3, i agree with you in the fact that getting the tire out from under the rig is a good thing no matter what. But for the money i would either put just put the tire in the back, on the roofrack or hold out and spend a little more and get a real rear bumper. My stock bumper is torn to crap from rocks and climbs.
