New 2016 GX460 owner here. Just installed the Ironman 4x4 FCP stage 2 kit and ended up tearing the outer boot on one of my cv axles. I'm looking at my replacement options now. I don't feel comfortable rebuilding the CV.... I attempted this on my 97 4runner and it didn't go so well. I'm looking at either new OEM axles, OEM reman, or CVJ axles as a replacement. I just stumbled upon Lexus PN 43430-60082-84. It's an OEM reman cv axle that you can purchase directly through Lexus parts stores. See link here: Remanufactured Shaft Assembly, Front 43430-60082-84 | Longo Lexus - https://parts.longolexus.com/oem-parts/lexus-remanufactured-shaft-assembly-front-434306008284

Does anyone have experience with this OEM reman option? Seems to be the cheapest route at $113/side, and hopefully much higher quality compared to a NAPA/China axle.

I ran the Toyota remans in my 2000 Tacoma for years and recently purchased one for the GX. I will vacuum bag it and stick it in a PVC tube and attach somewhere on the chassis.

I had good service from the Toyota remans.

FYI, I'm running a NAPA reman and it has been a good quality axle. The advantage of a NAPA remain is the warranty (usually 3 years) and availability (NAPAs are everywhere). IIRC, Lexus parts have a 12 month warranty. I already replaced one of my NAPA remans after tearing a boot - while installing my Ironman FCP lift - and they replaced it no questions asked.

I would be curious on who rebuilds the Lexus/Toyota axles - if it is Cardone like the NAPA axles or someone else. I paid ~$230 for a OEM reman axle for my old Subaru only to find it said Cardone on the box....

IDK who does it for Toyota/Lexus?

Thanks for the pictures @Washingtontaco . I'm pretty sure these -84 PN reman axles came out not long ago. After some searching, it looks like Lexus and Toyota started requiring cores to be returned when purchasing brand new cv axles recently. This was to kick start their OEM reman cv axle line.

With it being Made in Mexico it's probably a Cardone. Most of their axles and other stuff are remanufactured there. Looks pretty similar to a Cardone other than the paint on the shaft and inner CV joint (which are unpainted on the Cardone and NAPA axles, which are identical to one another). At least with the price being almost the same as a NAPA/Cardone it's a pretty good buy (not the same with other brands OEM reman axles).

How many miles on your '06?
Never had this happen before, but does one have to replace the axle when the only issue is a torn boot?
Is there a reason that just the boots can't be replaced? Or is it one of those stupid Toyota packaged deals, where you have to purchase the whole enchilada just for one part in the package. They're known for packaging entire assemblies and sell as a single unit for $$$ rather than break it down to individual components for about $.

My '16 has ~100k miles on it. I tore the boot because my pry bar slipped and slit the boot. during my suspension install.

Now the grease in the boot will become contaminated and leak out. One can either pull the axle off and rebuild it with new boots and grease, or replace the axle all together. The boots can absolutely be replaced, it's just a dirty and pain in the ass job (for me at least). Considering the price difference for an assembled reman axle isn't much more compared to cv axle rebuild parts, I'd rather go that route and simply pull the old ones and replace with new.

CVJ is super overrated. I live about ½ mile from their shop. Been there, used them, they use cheap Chinese parts. Nothing special. Might as well go to Vato Zone.

OEM CV boots are the only ones that will last. They are silicone, not cheap rubber. Straight from CVJ’s mouth… they do not use silicon boots.

If anything, find a local shop that can replace boots for you but get the boots direct from Toyota. No aftermarket boot compares.

I'm getting ready to tackle replacing my CVs this weekend. Are there any other parts I should replace while in there? I'm planning on replacing axle seals and lower ball joints. I have all main tools including the 35mm socket and seal puller. Any other tools or tips to make the job easier?

I would skip the LBJ unless its showing signs of wear. You'll also need a 250 ft-lb torque wrench and wheel bearing grease. Both axle seals will probably need a replacement unless they are perfect. A slide hammer makes pulling the axle very easy, but is not neccessary. Lastly, you'll lose some fluid out if the front differential and will need to top it back off.

+1 the best LBJs built are the ones from Toyota and you cannot buy them without an entire lower control arm. Don’t replace that unless it needs replaced.

Thanks for the replies. That's dumb they don't offer the LBJ separately. My LBJ boots look like they've seen better days, but I'll leave them as is until I replace the entire lower arm to get fresh bushings and ball joints. I ended up buying two CV's 43430-60082-84, new axle seals, new crush gaskets for front diff drain and fill plugs, and new gear oil. Wish me luck.

You can buy replacement 555/Altrom ball joint.

This is Kurt Williams company that specializes in land cruiser parts.
The 555 joint is a china trash cast-copy of the OE joint. It is not the same quality and will not last as long. You can get them at NAPA but still better off getting LCA from Toyota.

They are made in Japan and the OEM supplier to Toyota. Been having good luck with it. And many parts in any Toyota or lexus are made in China. Many parts made in US are substandard too. Country of origin does not automatically indicate quality.

Not for anybody that just want to pay somebody to do the job as the hours to put it in can be more expensive that parts saving. Still a good deal for home mechanic.

I have joints stamped 555 and they were 100% marked made in china. Got them at NAPA. I was so far into the LCA rebuild I had no other options. I speak from experience when I say the best option for LCA is but them new from Toyota.

Agreed, most US made stuff (autos especially) is trash. This is why I drive Toyotas :)
