So I've got a steering wheel shimmy that only appears at 70-75 KPH. No vibrations slower or faster. Shakes less when accelerating, more when coasting, about a half inch shimmy travel each direction on the steering wheel. What kind of gremlin is this?

Vehicle is my 2000 HZJ78 with a 2" TT suspension. 33" tires on 16"x10" rims.

Opinions, advice, polemics are all welcome. Thanks!

Any shimmy I look for loose steering components, deformed tires then bushing conditions. 9/10 time these will be your problem.

First thing I would check is adjusting/tightening the tie rod ends, then if those are good, I would check front bearing preload to make sure there is no play.

tire balance, uneven wear on tires can contribute, but the above are the primary reasons. Hope you are able to resolve quickly and easily!

Definitely have a look at your relay (tie) rod ends while checking everything over. They are a easily adjusted, and often over looked maintenance item.

Update: got the tires balanced and the shaking is gone. Seems obvious and a little silly, but I had balanced and rotated my tires fairly recently so I figured it might be some other issue. Apparently they didn't balance very.... precisely. Life in Panama, it can be a crapshoot. Thanks for all the advice, everyone. Cheers.
