I have a check engine light on my 96 so I purchased OBD-II software to analyze the fault. When I hooked it up there was a communications error, so to check out the software I used it on my 2000 and it worked fine.

So in troubleshooting the 96 I found the OBD-II connector on the 96 has the wrong pinouts. The ISO Protocol pinout should be 4,5,7,16, but the pinout is 2,4,5,16 which is VPW Protocol. Has anyone else run into this or have any idea why the pinout is incorrect?

The OBD-2 in my '96 (build date oct 95) works as expected.

Sometimes too well - dang PO_401...

Just a guess, but maybe the early '96 models were wierd, like the 1995 OBD setup.

Did a double check on www.obd-2.com on this ...yep the 96 is VPW.

The VPW protocol is for US made vehicle's GM, Ford, Dodge, etc.

Asian and European is ISO Protocol.

Did the triple check...on Alex's website it says VPW. You are correct that in "general" ISO is Asian and European...in "general" being the operative word. There are many exceptions...especially in the early OBD2 days. I originally had just the ISO gateway...but with owning 8 s*** boxes on wheels, I soon traded in my single connector for the Tricom connector listed on the site. No problemo since.

My 97 LC is VPW also and was the final straw that pushed me to trade in my ISO only connector.

I'll do some more research, thanks.
