You might run a search for some more feedback, but there are a variaty of options depending on how much you want to spend. Anywhere from $40 for a datalogger to a $140 for a decent low end scanner like they use at Autozone, which does code reading and erasing. IIRC, the Toyota scan tool is mucho dollars and probably not pratical for the typical DIY wallet.

Ideally, I think you'd want one that you can do engine manipulations (set rpms and run other tests from the scanner), but I beleive that will also get into some dollars.

Well see what others say.

click search and type in OBDII - you'll get a ton of info from prior posts. I use the OTC Mindreader I picked up off epay for cheap

A lot depends on you experience level both with the truck and scanners in general. I use a cheapo Northern Tool scanner that just spits out codes then reference them in the FSM. When I have a hard to define issue I hire another shop to hook up the $4,000 Snap On scanner that tells you more than you ever wnted to know.

thanks for the great response. my 80 engine light comes on intermittently then it would go away. yesterday, while driving i decided to make a sudden u-turn change and that's when the engine light came on. i just wanted to get one so that i can get the code and what symptoms it has in it. my two kids also have an 86 toy truck and 94 4runner. i'd figure it's worth the investment for these vehicles as well. i just hate to take this 80 to any local shop (God forbid, dealer) and give you a bunch of excuses just to take your $$$ away.

An OBD-II scanner won't help you with those. Only 96 and later (and some 95s) are OBD-II compliant.

OBDII is only 96 up, and some 95's. it will be no use on the 86 or 94, the 94 should have OBD I where you can short the right puns and count the flashes, the 86 might also
