Where's a good place to get yellow zinc plated nuts and bolts near raleigh? I've tried Fastenal but I don't need 30 lbs of bolts - just 5 or 6 at a time, and I hate the stuff they sell in hardware stores.

Did you try Wilders? If not, here is their info, they have been able to hook me up in the past when I was looking for some very odd bolts in the past.

Wilder's Inc Bolts and Nuts
2406 Alwin Ct
Raleigh, NC 27604
(919) 833-2761

They sell good fasteners at Ace, the ones with flanged heads, grade 12.9. What's wrong with that?

Ace - if they have more than 4 of them, has only silver - most of the time color doesn't matter but they never seem to have enough in those little bins.

Thanks James for the Wilders info - and they're next to Big Boss - two birds, one stone.

Gotcha. My ace must have a better selection.

Protip; pull out the hardware drawer a little farther and they usually have more stock in boxes, especially the flanged bolts.

Also, if it's something you need 10 or so of, check the price of a whole box. It's a LOT cheaper than individual prices, per piece if it's something you may use in the future. I needed some SS bolts, and IIRC paid an extra $2 for a box of 50 than I would have for 15 pieces.

Sorry for the hijack...but does anyone know of a place that does bulk plating? I have 50 pounds or so of misc Toyota bolts nuts washers, etc that would get great to have them dipped, plated and looking new.

X2 on Wilders! I have been by a lot-they have stuff you can't find elsewhere. They have weird hours though so check before you drive down.

Thanks - I'll check out Wilders (and I'll call before I go).

roadstr6 - I actually have that caswell system - but most of my nuts/bolts are too far gone - I'll use it for brackets and stuff later on. It is VERY time consuming for sure.

I amped up my power by using a higher amp converter from walmart. That does speed things up a bit but the most time consuming part is prepping the bolts for plating.

If you talking JIS style metric with the cap head and captive washer in yellow zinc that is going to be hard to find at a hardware store - however I have snagged a ton of them off cars in junkyards if you can find old Toyota's. Cleanest stuff I find that comes off fast is under the dash on old mini trucks. Just put a 10, 12 and 14 socket in your pocket along with a ratchet and go hunting.

For new stuff there are fastener kits on ebay and my friend Jason has bought all his stuff here: http://www.auveco.com/ I think Wilders has this stuff or can get it from auveco

I bought an assortment from Wurth USA and you can often find JIS at Japanese motorcycle and powersports stores but not usually in yellow zinc.

There was a thread on mud about where you can stuff to be replated. The word was to pack in all into USPS flat rate boxes. If you buy the shipping labels through paypal they are cheaper.

I have had good luck with Boltdepot.com if you need to order some hardware. They have JIS, yellow zinc, SS about anything you need.

I assume from your sig line that you are working on a 40. I looked at Coolerman's nut & bolt spreadsheet and came up with a rough list of the most popular size bolts used.

Bolt Dia./pitch/approx. # of times used
3/.5/<5
4/.70/4
5/.80/12
6/1.00/38
8/1.25/52
10/1.25, 1.50/25
11/1.25/2
12/1.25, 1.50, 1.75/17
17/1.25/<5
18/1.25/<5

I put this together to see what size (#) tap & die set would work for general maintenance. So within each bolt dia./thread pitch there are various lengths which I did not take into account. BTW, a 52 piece metric only set with the addition of 11/1.25, 12/1.75, 17/1.25, & 18/1.25 will cover most of what you need.
