Was driving at highway speeds today (around 60-65mph) with my 80 [something I don't do often] and I tried pressing the OD off button.

If the vehicle is already running in overdrive gear, isn't the tranny supposed to downshift if I press the OD off button?

It didn't effect a downshift.

I'm running at 2,000rpm plus at 60mph. It downshifts when I floor the pedal (I don't know to which gear)

Is this a common? Anything I could do to diagnose and solve this?

Thanks!

Not sure if this is common but mine downshifts if I depress the OD button at 60mph. Mine has a different trans from yours but they should operate the same. I could see if your speed was higher than maybe the computer would lockout the downshift:meh:

Does the O/D off light go on under the shift pattern on the dash when you click the button?

Mine will occasionally not shift into overdrive. I have a feeling it has something to do with the transmission temperature sensor (which doesn't allow the transmission to shift into overdrive until it has warmed up), but it doesn't do regularly, and I haven't been able to confirm, or diagnose the problem yet.

Mine wont shift into OD until the temp gauge is almost in the middle. I thought my trans was screwed when it first happened but then I found a thread somewhere that said that was what it was supposed to do.

When was the last time you changed the fluid and filter or did the cooler line flush?
I would start there.

Own an HDJ80 (ex JDM) and this version doesn't have the OD switch.

it's simply a 4-spd A/T.

I prefer having this one- less stuff to worry about. :) shifts fine at final gear @ exactly 60kph.

If its a cold day it may not be up to temp yet like some of the previous people have said. Drive it for about 5-10 min and let the engine reach normal operating temp and try it again to see if it kicks down.

130 degrees is the magic number (water/coolant temp)

Mine does this too, or when I hit 60 mph and lay off the gas, it will go into o/d.
;)

I am having this problem as well. Never shifts into overdrive. O/d off light comes on but it doesn't do anything. When running on highway at 65 or so my rpms are almost 3000. Any ideas on what this is? Temp sensor? Solenoid? Best way to diagnose?

Any help would be greatly appreciated because this is killing my gas mileage. 93fzj80
