We've had no less than 5 4Runners in our family. I had a '92 for 6 years, red, loved it (except for the 3VZ-E). I lost all interest in 4Runners when they put liftgates on them in '96. Hate them. Hate hate hate them. Have a liftgate on our Highlander, hate it, but I rarely drive it.

Gotcha. I've had a 90 and a 95...loved them both, but I was coming from the angle of re-sale value, engine desireability (love my 3rd gen) etc.
The tailgate is the one thing that Land Cruiser keeps getting right. I, too, hate the lft gate on my 98.
And the maroons/reds (in Texas, anyway) fail quickly and look like crap after a couple of years.

Really depends on what you mean by "worse." In my opinion it is the only body style built to date that actually looks like it belongs "off road" and not in a mall parking lot. Do the newer models have improved features and engines ( of course they do ... that is the nature of the automobile business ) however I would still prefer the earlier generation over my wives 2005 model any day.
Again just my opinion.....
