Normal for 60 to "work" to get to highway speeds?

Is it normal for FJ60s to take a few moments to get to 60-65 mph? I pretty much have to floor it to reach 65, then can let off a bit and pick up more speed when needed. Mine doesn't like much past 65 mph... she starts to shimmy a bit. I do need to take it in to get a major check-up (just bought it last week).

Would like a few opinions.

Compression? Clutch/Tranny?

New plugs, wires, rotor, dizzy cap, fuel filter, air filter, PCV valve (and grommet) and it will be like driving a new truck! Very easy to do yourself tune up.

I have an FJ62 and it does take it a bit more than the average vehicle to get up to speed esp if there is a hill or a strong head wind. So yes its normal. Sounds like you might need a good tune up though. I know the 60 are different from the 62 with the tranny and engine but I dont think it should be that difficult to get her up to speed. With the shaking and all, maybe you need a wheel balance, check your driveline, ujoints, etc. I would get a all around tune up and I bet you will notice a difference. I have had my FJ62 for 2years now and I still am having to get used to the lack of horse power but it has it where it counts. You have to keep in mind what they were made for. Not speed...Good Luck.

Thanks, guys.

I am all for doing my own tune-ups, etc... that is half the reason I wanted one of these machines. I want to keep her alive as long as I can. I will do the deal and post back soon.

And no, they are not built for speed... kinda like me. Thanks again.

I took the 60 out for her first 'high speed' run this weekend. Took the wifey and poochies to a park about 30 miles away. Got it up to about 60 pretty easily, but once I hit a hill, it's all over. Might as well get out and push.

The slipping clutch doesn't help matters much.

Doc - your slipping clutch may be from an engine oil leak - thinking about your other post and only had 5qts in the pan...it your oil pan is leaking and loose, it'll leak onto the clutch and cause some slipping. Did on mine, at least.

Also, you guys with power problems should check and make sure your second barrel is opening on your carb.

Yea, secondary diaphrams on the carb frequently need to be replaced if its still got the original in it.

Do a compression test at some point to see how healthy the engine. Also adjust the valves.

Doc - on your clutch, do you have plenty of freeplay at the top of the pedal stroke?

"Plenty"? Well, that's subjective. I have Maybe 1-2" of travel before I begin to get clutch disengagement.

But on my Little auto-xer it's about 1/2 an inch. So, there's a lot less there...

Also, it seems to take nearly the full stroke to completely disengage, again- I'm used to my Honda's clutch disengaging with nearly a tap on the pedal.

I bought a rear main seal from C-Dan with the clutch kit. Maybe that was a good call?

Isn't that some 60 owner's license plate?

I can get up to 65 (from about 10) in about 12 seconds on an inclined
onramp here in the 100°F+ heat. For a low-geared brick with a tractor
engine, that's fairly impressive to me.

Thanks for all the info. I really have a lot to check out.
