I belong to the Lake Tahoe Hi-Lo's, and we are having our 21st annual Gamblers Poker Run this August 16th. This is a fun and scenic trail located about 30 miles south of South Lake Tahoe. It is the only fundraiser for the Hi-Lo's, and almost all proceeds go back into the community Last year 100% went to Angora Fire victims. Usually the proceeds are divided up amonst various youth programs.

Yours truly is the trailmaster. We have rock-rollers stationed at the hardest spots, and a sweep team to collect/repair stragglers. We can't fix everything, but it is rare for a rig to be left on the trail(I can't recall one instance in the last 15 years, though we have towed one or two back to the pavement and loaded them onto trailers).

There are dinner options, and a raffle. Camping is at the intersection of Wolf Creek and Highway 4 about 20 minutes south of Markleville.

Saturday morning we stage at the campground and send rigs out in small groups every 10 minutes to take highway 4 to 89 (or is it 88?) back through Markleville and up to Blue Lakes where we air down and take the Deer Valley trail south to Hermit Valley, and then over Ebbets Pass back to the campground for the provided dinner and raffle.

There are prizes for the the best poker hands made up from cards given to participants at the checkpoints.

Check the link for safety requirements.

SWB rigs can do the trail on 31's, but a couple spots will require strict attention! You'd probably wish you had 33's. 80 series have done the trail (stock and built, stockers require lots of spotting and will drag a lot of bumpers/rockerpanels. We are a small club so if you don't have trusted spotters on hand beware cuz we will be stationed at static locations and will not travel the trail with you unless you are picked up by sweep. Built 80's will be challenged due to length/width but will escape unharmed with careful driving.) Stock minis/4runners will wish they had low gears.

For more info on the trail you can do a forum of search of Deer Valley. There are several trip reports on this trail and this years Norcal fj45 run is on the same trail though I don't recall the date of their run, might be the following weekend.

I hope some of you can make it. Here is the linkie. Lake Tahoe Hi Lo's
and I will happily answer any questions.

After some consideration, I would have to recommend that stock rigs avoid this trail. There are a few sections that would be very hard to complete without some carnage.

Would appreciate any comments by those in stock or mild rigs who have done this trail in the last two years (it has gotten harder in the last couple years).

My perspective is a little skewed due to having modified rigs and I have forgotten how difficult this trail can be in a stock rig. The only stock rigs I see on this event are wranglers, and out of 75-100 vehicles there will only be a few (less than five typically) that are bone stock.

We did this trail back in June of this year. It has gotten a little worse in a couple of places. (I did the trail three times last summer.) In our group was a lifted 80 on 35's with F&R lockers driven by a very experienced guy, he had no issues. For reference he turned around just past the gate keeper at Hermit Valley CG last year when his rig was stock. (We always run the trail S to N.)

In June we also had a full size Dodge Ram on 33's. He had a couple of encounters with trees, lost both tail light lenses. Here is his impression of the trail.

Again we run the trail South to North which is a bit tougher.

Edit: What Ken said.

I have run Deer valley from no to south in my bone stock full size f250

We did it in our fj40, stock with 33s and gears no to so. From the south I don't think we would have made it past the gatekeeper rock. Going downhill we got some damage there. There were two other sections where we took a bypass.

10 years ago when that trail was easier that would have been good driving. If you've done that in the last couple years that is really good driving!

Thanks for the replies.

I really LOVE this trail!
Its one of my favorites, but it DOES have the rep for being an "EASY" trail...Not so anymore! Every year it gets more and more pressure, and thus, more and more chewed up making it all the more difficult. IMO a stock rig has NO BUSINESS on that trail anymore. I did it 3 years ago stock and got the crap kicked out of me. I couldnt imagine it now in a stocker.

Have fun and enjoy the run! Sounds like a great one!
I have other engaugements on that weekend, but if I didnt, Id roll.
