I just purchased a 1984 FJ60 and we are in the process of driving it back to our home. About 150 miles in we noticed the temp gauge overheating with the A/C on so we shut it off and let it vent. The coolant was low so we added coolant and that seemed to fix the overheat issue. Somewhere along the way we noticed smoke coming from under the hood and blowing into the cab. It appears there is an oil leak at the back right side of the engine and the engine is puffing white smoke from the back valve on the engine block as well a second smoke out the exhaust. All gauges read fine and overall performance doesn't seem affected. I can post a few photos soon but I am at a loss at what could have happened. This is our first FJ and we have a lot to learn. Can anyone help us out? Thanks!

You talking this in red? Looks like it was welded *** edited, its rtv. What's the back story on this truck? Mileage? Did you pay a bunch? Is this your first 60? Do you have any skills on diy?

Side covers do leak. Is this the primary area you noticed it leaking? Anywhere underneath?

And yea guy above makes a valid point... bad head. White smoke is telltail if memory serves from reading here on mud.
White smoke out the tailpipe is generally oil.
Can't tell from your pic, but check to see if the 'Galley Plug' on the pass side of head, between 4 and 5 plug is leaking.
You really need to do some tests on the engine, starting with a compression test.

This appears to be where the oil is pushing out from. The PCV valve? Oil is on the underside of the hood and running down.
240,000 miles. Complete engine rebuild about 40,000 miles ago. Didn't pay a bunch and previous owner has documentation of all work. No priori issues. Mechanic is putting a seal on the PCV valve and says we need a new fan clutch as well.

Mine did that also, I found broken piston rings, resulting in blowby. Good luck.

How much did that fix put you out?
Excessive blow-by.
Check the PCV valve (at 8 o'clock in pic, with hose attached, out of rear of side cover). Shake it. If it rattles, it's ok. If no rattle replace with TOYOTA valve and new grommet.
Plus, some of those hoses are 30+ year old hoses. Need replace.

Shook it and it rattled. Decent amount of pressure coming out of the engine. Will change out the hoses. Have to find a good shop in Winston-Salem, NC. Any suggestions?

About $1800 in Toyota parts. I did all the work myself.
That was just the beginning of the project! There are a few 2F engines posted in the classifieds.
Dropping the oil pan will tell you a little, you should start with a compression check and work your way from there. There is no simple solution.
With that much blow by (some is normal) you need to have a compression test done before doing anything else. You need to baseline the health of that engine.

Other things noticed...
1. leak on the side (side cover) could be from a couple possible culprits... the side cover gasket (cork) is done and will require removal of the distributor (dizzy) to put on, could also be the that the nuts holding on the valve cover are loose and allowing oil to seep out, could also be that head gasket is leaking somewhere back there and allowing oil out.
2. air cleaner that is on there looks like a weber??? Do you know if the PO changed the carb out with something other than stock Aisin?
3. Heater valve (about 9' o'clock in the blowby pic) seems to be leaking from both hoses which could mean you have excessive pressure in your system or the hoses are old enough that they BOTH (upper and lower) need to be replaced. Check the valve for proper operation using the heat switch on the dash, the pin at the top should move up and down pretty freely when you move the switch from hot to cold.
4. Truck has been desmogged (again leading to the weber thoughts) so it would be a good idea to find the 60 desmog thread and go through all the hose routing to ensure everything is connected properly.
5. Looking at your last pic I see a lot of oil splatter on the underside of the hood which goes along with the blowby. Do you have records/receipts for the engine rebuild that came with the truck?

That oil leak is most likely being caused by the blowby, blowing oil onto the bottom side of the hood and then dripping down on the engine.
