My third brake light got smashed by a canoe on its way to the roof rack. I'm sure this won't be the last time this happens, so I don't want to bother spending the coin on an OEM light. Has anyone replaced theirs with a cheap one and then thought, "this works well enough"? There are a bunch online, I'm not sure which I should other with.

Just get a used OEM light from a salvage yard. I bought mine from @LC Parts Yard (jap auto parts lehi - Google Search - https://www.google.com/search?q=jap+auto+parts+lehi&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-us&client=safari)

I got an eBay version and had leaks (even with some extra added butyl tape), swapped to OEM and dry as a bone.
