Sorry for the second question of the day, when I cranked the engine this morning, ( warmish weather and a recent new battery) it turned 1/2 a turn and stopped, done this twice, it was a very similar symptom as my Toyota Hilux when the head gasket went and one of the bores filled with water.
I turned the lights on full high beam, then tried again, and it started ok, I checked to see if any water came out of the exhaust, but it was ok, anyone had this problem before....regards Mick.

contacts?

snowwolf- it does mean starter contacts. You can get the contacts and plunger (members of the board recommend replacing both). I believe there is a write-up in the FAQ or do a search- this has been discussed quite a bit.

Now gettin a little bit confused, are the starter contacts in the starter motor or do you mean that the starter motor has contacts elswhere? if it is in the starter motor, how easy is it to do the job?

My cruiser does exactly the same thing... but only when its low on fuel (absolutely zero in the sub tank, and almost at the point where the fuel light comes on continuosly in the main). I thought it was the stater motor area too (exact symptoms), but when I fill her up, she starts fine. Hard to find the fault when its starting fine so I am going to wait it out a little, but interesting.

If you have starting issues only when the tank's low, suspect a fuel pump on the way out. Fuel pumps on the tank use the fuel to keep them cool. If yours acts up when the fuel's low it may be marginal and a bit of heat's causing it to act up.

Doug has an interesting point about the fuel pump but because you said

>> it turned 1/2 a turn and stopped <<

and I assume you mean the starter stopped turning. If that's the case then the starter contacts would seem more likely. Very common problem as on this board we have had about 5 trucks with this issue in the past few weeks.

I just replaced my contacts with parts from CDAN. Took a fair amount of time to get the starter out and almost no time to get the contacts replaced.

Once the starter is out, how long does it take? are the parts you get fro CDan from Toyota, and do they have part numbers, I have not checked at the Toyota garage yet, but I can amagine them sayoing "AAAAAAAHHHHHHHH you have to buy a new starter motor, price is 2 million pounds, Thank you" I am from the UK so expect to get summat like that, but I will try.

US dealers will also recommend installing a reman starter. It is more cost effective for them to replace the component rather than rebuilding the component. The contacts and plungers are inexpensive; approx $25 for a plunger and approx $20 for a set of contacts. C-Dan is the parts manager at a local Toyota dealer so he only provides new OEM parts.

It takes about 30 minutes to remove the starter, 30 minutes to put in the contacts, and 30 minutes to install the starter. This estimate is for a first-timer that is closely following directions in the FSM. Having removed mine 3 or 4 times, I can do everything in 30 minutes.... blindfolded. :D

Remove the pos battery cable before you get started.

Do you have a petrol or diesel engine?

Dan's away for a week or so. I think he was going to give you the part number for the contacts based on your model. Would you like one of us to dig around and see if we can find the part number for the contacts? You might be able to source them locally if you had the exact number.

My 97 LX450 will sometimes hesitate to turn over when the key is turned. If I keep the key turned it will eventually turn over and start. Could this also be the contacts?
Thanks.

Can someone help me to find the right part # for the starter. I think my cruiser start having same problem lately.. 1st turn the key -> won't start but then 2nd turn the key again it start. Could be the starter? The battery is new. Also how much usually the starter cost ( roughly ) is it include the plunger itself?

Thanks

Jerry - why not just replace the contacts like this thread suggests?

How many miles on your LX450?
