So my dads owned his beautiful HZJ73 since October. Its sat parked for the last few months and he insured it last month. He never drives anyone but himself or one other person. Today he hoped in it picking up my little brother and friends and realized there were no rear seatbelts. Has anyone ever got a truck with no rear seatbelts?
It just seems a bit strange. Were both a bit baffled.

How did he get it certified to drive, better hope DOT doesn't run an inspection on it....that red tag in the corner of the window is a beakon for DOT.
We just had a shop here that certed vehicles without inspecting them and now they are calling in every vehicle that has been certed by them and now all the other shops are under the microscope.

My BJ74 has a roll bar in the back and the seat belt assi bolts onto it. I have pulled out the rear seats and belts in favour of extra cargo space. Also have a cargo barrier directly behind the front seats turning it into a two seater.
Does yours have the roll bar in the back that bolts on top of the rear wheel wells? If it does there may be threaded holes on it where the seat belt assi bolts on.

My 74 didn't come with any either.
I pulled the back seat out and put in a drawer so it was no big deal to me.

It depends on the intended market when it come to seat belts and roll cages in 73/74 series.
However in ForealBoreal's case all models had seatbelts by that year.

Ist thing to check is does it have the correct seat as the seatbelt models have a rear seat that has 2 locking latches to the floor and the seatbelt catches ,but again, being a HZJ73 it should do.
The non seat belt models have only one locking latch.

nope, the JDM 73/74 series did not come with seat belts.
according to the actual ruling "if the vehicle did not come equipped with seat belts from the factory they are not required" but each province is different in interpetation. BC and AB demand they be installed.
Ontario doesn't.
easy enough to do with lap belt only configuration.

They seem to have appeared in the HZJs, that I have purchased, in 1992. The 2 1990s that I own do not have seat belts.

Take the seats out, or fit seat belts. Passengers in the rear without seat belts is very dangerous.

As was said, the rear seat belts depends on the intended market, for example in Colombia they never install de seat belts, neither the Japanese that were imported, the main problem is that they are FRP and doesn´t have the rear roll bar where are placed, so you have to built one to locate them.

In Venezuela, the 70 diddn't come with rear seatbelts, it was only after 2.002 with the introduction of the 71 that we got rear seatbelts.

my hzj 73 got no rear seatbelts pass the quebec inspection.in fact this was the only point the inspector found on the truck.i got canadien bj70 rear seat belt.

My BJ74 does not have the roll bar, or the seat with two locking lactches for the floor. Instead it only has one latch with two small bolts that are not strong enough for mounting seatbelts to. I ripped up the carpet in the cargo area and found there are no brackets to mount the seatbelts to either. I read in another post "Pics of BJ74 Rear Seatbelt Installs? "
https://forum.ih8mud.com/70-series-tech/65300-pics-bj74-rear-seatbelt-installs.html

that the BJ74 is registered as a cargo vehicle in Japan, therefore the japanese model did not come with seatbelts. I found a site called andoauto that has reinforcment plates. I'm am planning on buying 6 of those and welding them underneath my body and mounting my seatbelts to them. Here is a link to the site:

Seat Belt Components,Hardware And Related-AndoverRestraints.Com

I am still unsure of the laws for mounting seatbelts in Alberta; however, I do know that according the American SAE code "seat belts can be attached using a 2 1/2" diameter 1/4" underbody reinforcing washer and these reinforemecemts far exceed the strength of the code washer" This is what the guy at ando Auto told me.

I hope this helps, if I find anymore information I will post it.

My 1991 HZJ73 FRP top has seatbelts;)
They are those lap belt ones.
But i know i wouldnt like to be in one of them in a crash.

interesting since the EPC doesn't show rear seat belts for a JDM BJ74... one of the rare ones ...
