No more knocking/rattle sound at start up... (1 Viewer)

95 FZJ80 w/ 73k miles and 10w30 synthetic. (synthetic switch over at 72,000 miles)

I switched out the Amsoil SDF-15 oil filter and replaced it with the oem Toyota oil filter YZZ..... and no more knocking at start up. I know there are a LOT of threads on this but I want to post my experiece with trial and error as it may or may not help you. Again, soon as I switched to the oem Toyota YZZ... filter I have NO knock at startup. The reason is that the Amsoil SDF-15 filter is TWICE (double) the size (of the oem Toyota YZZ... filter This may be case for others out there who are not using the oem type filter. FYI, the YZZ... is tiny, about 3"+/- in diameter......thanks for the info Cary.

When I first got the truck, it had a Napa Gold filter on it and I still got the startup knock. I changed to the old Toyota filter (one not available anymore) and the knock was not as bad but not completely gone. I have tried K&N, and other filters and the startup rattle is reduced most with the old OEM filter. Just my experience and may be different with others.

the ole OEM, eh? that would be the one that some smarties here have stashed in large numbers for subsequent resale at weight-in-gold prices to shaken-to-the-core-by-the-rattle scared cruiserheads...?

Acolella did you have a knock, as in a rod knock, or did you have the more common start up rattle?

A rod knock will have a steady beat at idle, the start up rattle the few times I have heard it sounds like a raspy random undulating noise.
