Hello fellas i need your help here with a fuel system problem that im trying to figure out. This is a 86 Toyota 4Runner with 22RE EFI engine stock. This Toy was running before but it was time for a rebuilt. This is where Iam at Ive checked the Ignition system and its all good, I did a compreesion test and read all cylinders above 100psi{good}, Next I checked fuel system what i found to be wrong, -- I grabbed a spray bottle with fuel and sprayed some into the throttle body Car will start until the fuel that i sprayed was gone. So I took off top intake "again" to check the fuel system right. It has a new filter on it, I check for voltage on each injector plugs; They all have signal voltage, There is plenty of fuel in in the fuel rails including the "cold start" line injector. There only place I didnt get any signal voltage was from the cold start injector plug, But i wasnt sure if it works only when you crank the engine. So fellas Whats happening here Im pretty positive is not the injectors if one was bad engine will still start Could a fuel pressure regulator cause this kind of problem?? Any help will be great thanks PEPE

Are you getting fuel smell at the tailpipe??????

Good point there KliersLC I will check tomorrow maybe its flooding! But why would it start when sprayed fuel in the throtle body

The reason I ask, is if you are not getting fuel smell at the tail pipe, then you aren't getting fuel to your cylinders. even if you have voltage at the injectors, something in that system could be screwy or your fuel pump may not be putting out enough pressure. If you don't have a fuel pressure gage, just take off the line from the fuel rail and point it in a safe direction, and crank engine, you may have to prop open that little flap in the air intake, IIRC that controls signal to the fuel pump on a lot of rigs..........You did have the air intake hooked up right? Anyway, fuel pressure regulator could be it but I never messed w\one of those.

Also, if you do have fuel smell at t\p then your timing/cranksensor/tps could be sending the fuel signal to the injectors at the wrong time, but it would still run fine with sprayed in fuel.
I hope this helps
Dan

Not much to add. I have the same rig. I only know without the cold start injector plugged in, mine starts very hard. And with the air intake disconnected it doesn't run at all.

KliersLC what ecxatly you mean the air intake?? Did you mean upper intake ? I wil return with somne result later today. I have beat this thing!

I mean the air intake in between the air filter and the throttle body, There is a little aluminum piece with a big plug on it called the(IIRC) mass air flow sensor. If that flapp is not open due to air flow or being propped open, the fuel pump gets no signal.
Good luck

Very Dissapointed KliersLC I put everthing back in place still no start  . KliersLC I see no plug between the air filter and throtle body but the air tube itself. This is 86 Toyota EFI I see no plug related to the tube . As today everthing went back in place and nothing, I know for sure there is fuel in the rails B/C i unplug the cold start fuelline and fuel with pressure fleww out. I tested out the injector plugs and I get voltage I put a paper clip attached to both sides of the plug and crank the engine with key on and they dont blink alike i was told its suppes to. What the heck is happenning here. Also I do have a fuel pressure guage but where do i plug into ?

Well, If I am understanding correctly, you have fuel in the rail, voltage at all the injectors, but no intermittent voltage at the injector plugs. If this is correct, then your injectors are not getting the proper signal to open and close, so it could be a problem with the tps, cps, or ecu. My mistake on the mass air flow sensor, they must have not put those on until later. I know you have already, but go through carefully and make sure everything is plugged in where it supposed to be and also check to make sure that the timing is correct.

For the fuel preesure gage, you can put it wherever you want, ie fuel rail, injector line or whatever, but the best is to put it on the main feed line from the tank. Yours does have an electric fuel pump right?

Also, you never told me about whether or not there was fuel smell in the tail pipe.
I no longer have my 85 pickup with efi. nor my 94 4runner w\efi so I am doing this as best I can from memory.

You might try 4x4wire or Pirate forums, as there are quite a few more guys there that have a little more info for you
Good luck and I hope this helps,
Dan

Oh hell yeah!!

KliersLC and guys I finally found the problem after rechecking all basics and my work again. Everything was at specification, The problem was on top of the coil theres a little box with green 3 plug wire. I found one wire torn after tearing off the seal of those wire to see if everything was hoked up. I rewire the torn wire and Poom and starts at first crank. I thought i should put this just in case others have a situtation alike this Thanks again fellas

I am glad you found it, sorry I wasn't more help
