Took my carb off and here's what was between the carb insulator (the orange stuff) and the intake manifold. BTW I need a new carb insulator with heat shield if anybody knows where I might get one. Had no idea they were one piece. Well at least they were at one time.

1. The gasket is embedded into the insulator. There is NOT a separate gasket required per se.

2. It's a big no-no to use silicone between the carb and insulator.

3. I think I have a box of those insulators in my back room at the shop. Someone else called me on Friday for one. I've got to remember to look for that box.

Get a used one from Mark. Used is fine, as long as the top and bottom gasket faces are still intact.

Worst case, Toyota shows still available:

Part Number: 2191261033 List Price Core Price Your Price
INSULATOR, CARBURETO $52.50 $0.00 $39.90
Part number 2191261030 was superceded by part number 2191261033.

What about silicone between the insulator and the manifold? That orange stuff in the picture is a very thin rubbery material and it is unlikely (but not impossible) that this had ever been removed since new.

Jim, thanks for the part number I need to call CDan about some other parts so will inquire.

Silicon RTV is not gasoline proof. With exposure to fuel, it turns to a gelatinous gunk that does not seal and can get sucked into the engine.

The instructions say something like "excellent for sealing coolant & oil. Not recommended for exposure to gasoline".

Use a good gasket and RTV is unnecessary.

Now unavailable according to Cdan.

Is the heat shield really necessary? Mine is also cracked like the picture above and I was wondering if I can just get rid of it. I don't want to spend the $129.44 from SOR for a new one. (For a 5/76 FJ40)

Thanks.

I have read conflicting statements on this subject. Some say is OK without it in cooler weather, but can be a problems in the heat.
