I pulled up to the highway tonight -20, so happy that my truck started, but it did make a strange noise. I pushed the brakes and they went all the way to the floor, there were cars coming so I pulled the ebrake as hard as I could and it stopped just before the on coming traffic, god did that scare me...

Anyway tomorrow I will look into the problem hopefully it will be a little warmer outside. I was thinking the noise could have been my brake booster or vaccum pump, I had a small leak in one of the front calipers but nothing major...

Any idea's? What would you guys check first?

Thanks for any help
Eric

Got a leak as you said.

Did the cruiser pull to one side or the other?

If so the leak is caliper related.

Or did the cruiser have no brakes at all and still steered straight?

If so Master cylinder leak.

Either way you need to get that whole braking system re-done. Brakes deserve the best of attention..

Good Luck,

Randy

Your right I'm dropping part of my savings on all new parts

well just back breaks, lines, and master

Where would be the cheapest place to get all toyota genuine parts? I just need back drums, shoes and hardware, a master and wheel cylinder....

If your pedal goes to the floor it is NOT the vac pump or the booster. Vac pump or booster failure would result in a rockhard pedal.

Going to the floor means you lost the fluid in the hydraulic system somewhere. There's a leak at the master, or at any of the calipers/wheel cylinders, or a broken brake line. It is well possible that there was water in there somewhere, which froze, and ruptured your line.

check for leaks.

we just did a brake master, no fluid loss but the fluid went past the seals in the master and the driver had NO brakes...scared the crap out of him...
new master and all is well...
BTW, the BJ74 and the LJ71,78 share the same part numbers $550 new...
the BJ70 shoudl be much cheaper...

Eric ever thought of trading up to a newer truck and saving some money and headaches?

He is just about in sight of the reliabilty plateau;)

Whats the difference between the BJ70 and BJ74 MC. Does the 74 on a RHD send the lines the other way to avoid heat from the turbo?

It just feels like I've done so much already, I really do wish I had looked into that white BJ70 you had a while back...

I'm torn, because I feel like if I sold it now, there are so many good parts, and it is a solid enough truck to last someone a long long time... At the same time, It is in need of brakes, and perhaps two fresh batteries, who knows what will be next...

this is my list thus far, not all of it was nessary, some of it was me trying to prevent things from happening

The rad's was re cored last week
the front birfield's were rebuilt last year, new bearings, brakes, seals
I have my isspro mechnical gauges pyro, oil pressure, water temp
new water pump
new rad hoses
block heater
new battery cables
window tint
racor fuel filter
newer drive lines (from G&S)
rebuilt starter
the fuel tank was re done last year, all new lines
My OME lift
new weather stripping, on windows, and doors
New rear sliding window frame
aluminum rims
31 inch rough rider tires
I have amsoil in everything
it shifts so nice

there is more thats just all I can think of right now...

hey, i know the feeling...
i have had trucks where i have thought "if i fix this then it will be good for a long time" then some other thing busts...finally you either love the truck and keep sinking coin into it or you move on and let someone else deal with the problems...
now i never keep a truck long enough to care...except that money pit LJ78

What would cause front calipers to blow a piston seal on both sides only a year after they were put on? They were both remanufactured, but looked perfect when they went on? I only put maybe 40 000km's on them..

any idea's?

the old ones were just dinked, and they didn't leak, the seals didn't even exsist.

thanks for any help
Eric
