NJ Smog Test Results

In July I had my 1991 FJ80 inspected and alas, my trusty steed of 16 years failed the smog test. My downpipes were full of holes, O2 sensor ports leaking, O2 sensors of unknown mileage, exhaust system in general disrepair. Given all that, the CO results were below standard and the HC was only 10 points higher.

Last week I had the down pipes with cats replaced, new OEM O2 sensors installed w/ all new gaskets, hardware, etc. The motor is always in good tune on my truck and nothing else was touched other than pipes/sensors. Keep in mind I don't have a smog pump anymore.

That's pretty amazing IMO. Good till 09. My trust steed rides again.

You are lucky. Your rig is now 15-16 years old, and most of your somg equipment should be shot!!! During 1988-99 when we were trying to pass Federal Emissions Testing in an attempt to get out Landcruiser FI system smog legal, we had to use 1885-87 FJ60's, which were then 11-13 years old. "One Thousand Percent" of the total smog device on both vehicles was defective. Worse, one item was no longer available, so we had to epoxy the old part together just to proceed with the test. We remover 11-13 year old valves and rusty water poured out of them, makes you just want to eject the contents of your stomach!!!!!

I didn't mean to imply that none of my smog equipment had been changed for 16 years. That's just silly. I keep after things for the most part. All the EGR stuff has been replaced, all vacuum lines have been replaced, all hard lines cleaned, etc. over the years. The point of my post was that it should be able to benifit others by showing that catalytic converters and oxygen sensors can be replaced with excellent results according to a tail pipe sniffer.

All emissions equipment has a lifespan. Rubber diaphragms dry rot over time, vacuum lines crack, VSV valves do the same.

Wanted to post a quick update for those who care. Just passed inspection and am good till 2011.

It appears they changed the standards slightly.
The limits for 2007:
HC LIMIT 100
CO% LIMIT .50

The limits for 2009:
HC LIMIT 220
CO% LIMIT 1.20

2007 inspection: 189345 miles
HC 14
CO% .01

2009 inspection: 206392 miles
HC 48
CO% 0.00
CO2% 14

Runs like a top.

Its interesting that they raised the allowable limits. I wonder if they re-categorized the LC into a different category that has different standards.
