Nitto Terra Grappler AT's

I just got my OME suspension and I'm about to order new tires. I was all set to buy 295x75 BFG AT's. But, I drove Juke's 100 with the Nitto's and I have to say I really liked the look of the tire and how it drove. So, now I'm on the fence on which of the two to get. For any of you guys that are running the Nitto's, how has the mileage been for you? Did they get louder as the mileage increased? I am really considering buying them now. Money is not my motivating factor here; performance and mileage are. However, they are quite a bit cheaper, about $250 less for five tires than the BFG AT's.

This does not answer your question, but I've ran BF Goodrich AT for quite some time on different trucks. I would say that I have averaged around 45-55k miles before needing replacements. I don't believe that noise level increases with the mileage on the ATs.

I think mileage should be comparable between the BFG AT's and Nitto Terra Grapplers. I know the Nitto's are heavy, but for the money, they are an excellent tire. I have heard mixed reviews of the off road performance/durability of both tires. I have only driven the Nitto's for 5K miles so I dont know if they get louder.

I run 285 Nitto's and 315 BFG AT's. I only slightly notice increase in mileage and power between the two tires, but this is due to size differences more than tire.

Nice rig... I could actually crawl under yours to change oil. With my running boards "on yet" ( they are coming off ASAP ) it's a tight fit.

I was going with the 295's but, following the latest discussions. I'm going with 285's.

I don't see anything in that thread that would convince me to go 285 over 295. I see the reasoning of going with 285 over 305, but the added diameter of the 295 should outweigh the minimal difference in width between it and the 285.

Thanks for the reply. I know from past experience that I can count on +/- 50k miles out of a set of BFG AT's. I'm just hoping some of the guys that are running the Nitto's are getting the same type of mileage. Can any of you guys with the Nitto's confirm this?

Has anyone gotten 50k on BFG's on a 100? That's a big pig to get 50k out of but it is possible as I've got over 41k on my Revo's currently. I was just wondering if anyone could document it personally on a 100. I know I'll get 50k out of the BFG's on my Taco but it's a featherweight! (BFG Rugged Trails suck by the way, OEM on the Tacoma).

You make a good point. My experience with the BFG AT's was with a LR Discovery running 265x75. With all the armor I had on it, it probably weighed close to the 100 although I don't have any exact numbers on that. My Dad got more than 50k on BFG AT's on his '88 Suburban. They are 32x11.50's and they are still going strong. That rig has to weight more than a 100, it is a tank.

My $.02 on the BFG is that they have great looks and off-road performance, but for highway driving they are rough. I ran a set on a 97 4-runner that were also very difficult to keep balanced. I have no experience with the Nitto’s. That said, I am replacing the stock Michelin’s in the next month with a set of the new Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armor’s (285 75’s). I am hoping for a good mix of on and off-road performance.

Nitto are 2 ply vs BFG 2 ply sidewall. That is why the nitto ride nicer. Get the nitto and get the road hazzard warranty. Just make sure it would cover off road use.

Greg I'd bet that "tank" doesn't outweigh the 100 as much as you think. In fact unless it's a 3/4 ton it doesn't even weigh as much! It's just a common misconception that our vehicles are lighter.

It's a shocker what classifies as a tank.

That's it for my interesting tidbits of info. I still haven't contributed to the tire decision in this thread any! ;p All I have is this: If for some reason you ever lose 2 tires and you have to go to a store or garage you'll be far more likely to get a 285 off the shelf vs. a 295. If you're running 34" swampers you're really screwed.

I'm not saying they do but say the Nitto's got 10k fewer miles, they are $250 cheaper, right? $250 is like 25%? I for one don't like high mileage tires. The composition of the rubber changes with each heat cycle. Some tires are more resistant to change but still, they do.

In fact I like putting on new tires. If it wasn't for cost, I'd like to change my tires every 15K miles--which actually I do on some of my cars. It's the most crucial component between you and the road (rock, snow, mud).

The Nittos are really good tires. My honest opinion is that that they are as good as the BGF AT's for the first 20K. After that the BFG's are much better. I had the Nittos on my 400hp Expedition and they were awesome for the first 15K, but they wore on the edges after that. The BFG AT's wore much better, but were similar up to the 20K point. Actually, the Nitto's were a tad better in the mud, but the AT's were better in the rocks and sand.

It's really a tossup, but the BFG's last longer.

The roof rack is an ARB. Rear bumper is from Slee Offroad.

Truck is a 99 with rear locker.
