Newbie wants to rebuild inherited FJ60

I have been reading forums on here for a while and am amazed at amount of information that is available here. And what a better time for it than now, as I have just inherited a 1984 FJ60. To honor the name and memory of the previous owner, my father, I want to dive into this truck and give it a new heart and soul. Here is a quick rundown on the condition:

  • Stock except for 2", new alternator, new master and slave clutch cylinders
  • 210K on original 2F and four speed, lite rust on rear wheel well and tailgate. It appears that there is a oil return tube running from tranny to tcase, perhaps poor mans broken seal fix? Looks like it works nonetheless. Tranny grinds a bit between gears and whines like hell. 4WD works great.
    • Sounds like a pretty serious exhaust leak coming from manifold/J-pipe area. When laying under truck, a quite noticible hissing sound comes from that area.
    • Interior is nice. Could use some new seats up front, but otherwise pretty clean. Nice roof, dash, etc.

My goal is to bring this truck some pep and life, with a reliable heart and good looks to boot. I will post some pics over the next few days. Will be giving full tuneup, fluid and belt changes, greasings, and the like soon.

Not sure exactly what I want to do, but have a feeling this will develop into a build-up. Out of 10, I would give this truck an 8 for body and frame, 5-6 for tranny/tcase, and 6-7 for engine. My pics will say more, stay tuned. Any advice or following is appreciated and well taken, and I see myself spending $5-7K on this old lady.

Will need to be a reliable daily driver, capable off road (but nothing extreme or specialty), and something I can maintain for another decade or two. I am 28 and pretty solid with a wrench, but may get pro help for much of this stuff.

    so there it is
    pics comin' soon:cheers:

Do everything that you can yourself. The average "technician" in the garage has a smaller "give a damn" center in his brain than you have. Most of them look at your rig as an "Old Truck" so we will just stick back together somehow. As really good mechanic is priceless.

as far as new seats go, i have a link that might help you out a little, they're of my rig, and my seats, and the place i got them in Fredericksburg, VA, who are more than happy to ship them anywhere...
