New to the forum. Have an interest in getting a nice FJ60 in the future but in the meantime I borrow my friends FJ62 (OME Suspension) when in SoCal as he doesn't use it much. But there's a few tech issues.

1) When it's a warm day and the truck has been running for a while it sometimes fails to re-start for a few minutes. You can hear the relay kick and all the rest of the electrics come alive but no joy on the starter until some time passes.

2) Passenger side and rear electric windows run down very slowly, but sometimes almost don't come back up at all. WTF?

3) The brakes, oh the brakes. He claims there's braided hoses on there but man they're still not good. Any tips for an upgrade that doesn't involve mega bucks?

4) The air intake. There's a TRD labelled cone filter but the pipe work has it placed directly behind the battery on the right side. There's absolutely no room in front or around it so it's just sucking in warm air and not even much of that, basically choking the engine. Possible improvements? Cold air scoop?

Any tips, hints and possible fixes for the issues would be really appreciated as given I get use of an FJ for free I'd like to repay the favour a little and have licence to improve.

Thanks in advance dudes,

H

As far as the start problem. I'd clean all the cables and connections as a start. Someone else will have to chime in for the rest.

You may need to rebuild the starter with new copper contacts and plunger. Easy to do. Confirm the hot wire to starter, starter ground, and battery connections are good.

The cruiser windows have issues going up. There is a thread on the 60 fourm where a guy put in relays and it helped dramatically. Relays are cheap. So it a bit of wire. Just time...

Lot's of guys run 4runner calipers on the front. If your brake master cylinder is worn that may cause decreased braking capability. Hard to tell the exact problem. Brakes are a safety issue. Deal with this first.

Not sure on your intake. I have a snorkel :D

The stock 62 intake pulls cold air from the right front fender....

and filters very very well.

Many thanks for the responses guys. I'll get on the case next time I'm there. Snorkel might be preferred option for air as it does go properly off-road sometimes. Interesting about the brakes, like the sound of more modern calipers but still OEM. Electric issues are certainly doable by the sounds of it. Does Seafoam help with engine running? Where I live we have a thing called Terraclean which de-carbonises the injectors and cylinder head, works well. Also takes emissions right down. Thoughts appreciated as always.

Another quick question and ideal as a thread bump: how difficult is it to relocate the battery to the driver's side and would this provide some additional cold air into the engine bay to cool things? I have asked elsewhere on the forum about upgraded battery connectors and also noticed stainless trays are available. Thanks again for any help.

Our landcruisers FJ60 and 62 are international frames meaning you can mount a stock second tray on the driver's side easily (because diesels are used in other countries where 24V systems are used).

I doubt you will get much better performance by increasing and/or cooling the air intake. Our tractor motors are not fast. Focus on reliability...

Are there any clearance issues with stock wheels and the aforementioned 4Runner calipers?

No problem with the «chrome» original wheels from 60 serie landcruier... but it is not the case with the old 40 serie steel welded gray wheels.

Sorry for thread resurrection but I have another question.

On my friends FJ62, gearbox is an auto, when selecting reverse there is a positive kick through the whole truck and solid 'ping' like when a rally car selects first on the start line. What might this be and how is it cured?

Look up Rodney Flush in the forums... Usually, from what I remember, that is not a good sign for the A440 tranny on the 62.

Reading the tranny threads it sounds like what's happening is the relative norm as there are no other symptoms than when changing from D/P to R so a Rodney Flush may be the way and grease U joints. While reading all this I've noticed changing the idle RPM helps and also tightening the shifter cable. How difficult are these to do for an FJ newbie?

Final question, I promise, CEL intermittently comes on. Actually most of the time. The engine and exhaust are unmodified, for now.

Any ideas?

Determine what the CEL code is and it will lead you to the answer... If the code is in reference to the exhaust then it probably has to do with the O2 sensors.
