Question .... are your catalytic converters bad? If they are, you should replace them. If they aren't, why throw that money away? You won't gain enough performance to justify the swap IMO.

It seems like getting new 02 sensors would be smart right? I was up until 1 last night learning about headers. I really like the DT headers but will wait until manifolds are a judgement call to even think about it, since the installation is not 100% benefited by other work I am doing now

Congrats on your new-to-you LC! Love the color! Looks to be in very nice shape from the one pic you posted. So, what's the story? How did you find it, who was selling it, why so much rust, etc? $10K looks to be quite a steal - how many miles?

When it goes up on rack in a week or so i will take under pics for MUD rust evaluations.

RIP my jeep cherokee. I thought I would post a photo i had the seller take of me and my dogs so you can understand the growing pains we have undertaken to join you guys. We will miss it but for better or for worse I am a Land Cruiser guy now. Cars is the only time i agree with having all of your eggs in one basket being good (two wheeled extras dont count)

The jeep went to a good home. A friend of mine's sixteen year old got his license yesterday, and i gave him a good deal since i got one on the LC. Hope karma pays off.

@BlackLab you'll love the LC, it's a very well built rig and you'll get years of enjoyment after catching up on maintenance. By the pic, it also looks like you live in dry country? If so once you address the rust from creeping, you should be fine.

We've gotten 5 feet of snow at my house (NW of Boston) in the last 17 days! Not good if you care about rusty under carriages, but priceless if your LC gets you to the mountains and home in safety during a blizzard. My wife even said, "I'm really glad we took the LC" and she would much rather drive her Ody. As we left the White Mountains of NH after a weekend of skiing in powder, we drove 3 hours home in freezing rain and snow and the LC didn't skip a beat.

I live in Virginia. I will look forward to rust recommendations after i post pics later. One mechanic said not to do new coating because of trapping whats already there....we will see. today is all about new shiny stuff!

get toyota timing belt and water pump. it will last longer than the ac delco ones. rust is a no no but its a heck of a low price.

It might be a bit late, but seek out the ROKLIMO build thread in the FAQ area.....

He went through a very detailed explanation of his own LC through a 5-year evolutionary process, and about 3 different suspension setups (from stock to a 35" tire). There were a few nuggets of wisdom in there about specific combinations of springs, shocks, etc. that might prove helpful to you.

If you have an interest in adding heavy aftermarket bumpers (Front and Rear), rock sliders, skidplates, etc it will have an effect on the springs/shocks that you should buy initially. In LC parlance, people refer to them as "Medium" kits, or "Heavy" kits, etc.

Welcome!

If that's the thread by the guy in the middle east, it's outstanding and bookmarked.

Largest 16" tire size that will fit the spare tire location is a 295/75/16.
"Fit" is a funny word. Technically, it will "fit" after you remove the bracing hardware and raise the crossmember that has the winch on it. But after you do that, it is darn near impossible to access as the sidewall blocks any real access to the winch. if you run 295's, my input would be to put a 255/85/16 spare in the stock location (almost exactly the same OD) and quite a bit narrower, and save the hassle of stuffing a whale of a tire into what will very quickly look like a small space.

l will look at that. It sounds good. Thanks

Agreed @re_guderian / Rob; re: "fit".

It also depends on the type of tire.

I'm still rockin' 285s, but the next set I pick up will be 295s. But I fully expect that depending on the tire I will likely have to flip the bracket as others have done.

Well the education has continued for me. All my parts are ordered and most here. Monday afternoon the games begin. First round is timing belt and all of the other things that you guys recommended that go with that. Exhaust and catalytic converters go in as well. I went with Borla system, and found some nice Walker direct fit cats for about 400/each. In this first round I am also doing differentials, power steering, other maintenance.

i ended up wanting a clean wheel view and braking system (needed new rotors in front) so i went with all new rotors (power stop, drilled and slotted) calipers (oem remanned), even new torque plates in back. I read with great interest the wheel thread that involved Dustin and FN Wheels. He was awesome. We talked at length and he was very knowledgable. The plight LC owners face in wheel choices at 18 is now more obvious to me, and i realize some of the ones i was looking at were undoable. I bought Dustin's last set of Weds Adventure wheels. I am stoked about them. Polished silver with gunmetal insets. I will be going with Toyo AT2's because of aggressive sidewall action. I will be going with 285/65r18.

I received the Slee 2.5 lift already. went with medium which will allow for front bumper if i want one later. After reading all of the threads on upper control arms, and talking with some folks I went with those too.

I am really excited about getting this all done and cant wait to be cruising.

I elected not to post rust pictures and hear half of the United States make me feel bad about them. Thanks so far for the help and i will be a paying contributor soon.

Sorry I messed up the photo inserts but these are the wheels. Here is a photo of them in action.
