Newbie- how many people use 150k plus as daily driver

Only problem is fuel cost but I wont drive a small unsafe car.

Ditto; one side of my brain says, get some little car that gets great mpg; the other side says, no, you don't want to get squished.

I recall many years ago one of my physics professor discussing this very point in class; bottomline, the guy with the most mass wins.

When my cruiser was sick last winter during a trip I was forced to rent a Hyundai 4WD (the big one, forget the name), brand new 2006/7 maybe 1500 miles on the odo. A complete POS, totally underwelmed; Bumpy jouncy ride, tinny feel to everything, touchy steering, funky handling, etc, etc.

Then I get back into my "old" 80 with 200K+ on it; back home again
floating down the highway, feeling much more secure. Priceless.

Mine is still my DD at 227,000 miles on the OD. Like others have mentioned, though, gas prices are killing me. I spend about $390 a month on gas just to commute. A motorcycle is in my near future after paying off a few bills.

I typically only drive the cruiser on trips in the winter months or inclement weather. I like to keep the mileage low if at all possible as I know I will have this rig for many years to come. My daily driver is a WRX.

My LC80 is my DD. My life is worth more than a few hundred bucks that I save on gas money, then I put myself in a car that made out of soda cans.

However, the mpg cost is becoming an issue. I called a VW dealership last week, looking for a diesel. No more into the country until march/april 2008 due to diesel emission regs. VW diesels get crazy mpg, like up to 45+/gallon.

My coworker claims his VW gets him 45MPG city/highway split.

fueleconomy.gov, which has redone their measuring metrics and applied the changes retroactively on their website, says a 2005 Jetta will get 33-35 mpg (auto-manual). About 10mpg better than my '07 Civic. Of course, I hate diesels.

Some small cars are safe. However, small and safe seem to be newer and thus more $$.

I drive a 2007 Civic LX. 6 airbags. Good front AND side crash test results. It serves as my DD.

FWIW I use my 162k 96 as a daily driver and just bite the bullet on the gas. I have an Accord wagon too if I'm just buzzing around town, or road tripping with no need for the extra space. I actually totalled it out on a deer hit a few years ago and bought it back from the insurance co. and had a buddy fix it over time for cheap. Into it for about $1500 now and runs like a champ.

All the extra costs of insurance, licensing, etc aside, just nice to have it in case the LC gets mad at me. I kind of like the feeling of having the second car if I want to work on the LC without having to have it back together the same night.

96 with 164k DD "brand new" to me.

9 miles to work two to three days a week. Had it for 12 days and less than a half a tank of gas. Love every moment driving it and working on it.

My dad bought his 80 brand new in 93 and used it as a daily driver till about 280,000 miles, then handed it off to my brother, and now its in my hands at 332,000. The engine doesn't burn any oil, transmission still shifts solid (although it pops out of reverse at about 15mph), and nothing has ever been rebuilt. I use it as a beater/trail rider, but want to tow my rx7 with it, once i fix the exhaust and possibly enhance the power output. That 150,000 mile LC of yours has just been broken in!

I have 2 daily drivers, a 1991 Isuzu P/UP truck, 2355,000 + miles I use it 5 days a week, daily stop and go. An 1983 FJ60, 168,000 miles, driven daily, abused in heavy traffic. To this date, no problems. Oh, I forgot my Sunday driver; the 1992 FJ80, 52,000 miles, pampered!!

I usually average about 12.5 l/100km or 23 mpg (real gallons not US)

That's 18.8 US MPG, folks.

I daily drive mine and end up putting about 500 miles a week on it just for getting back and forth to work. About 90 or so miles per day. Right around 204k miles on my '92 and I have no complaints, and neither does my 80.

I'm putting in about $100 of gas per week, but I wouldn't have it any other way.

I don't think physics have changed in th last ten years, every time I see a small unibody car tangle with a truck or suv the unibody looks like a crumpled ball of aluminum foil afterwards. airbags do not prevent injury in the middle of that ball of crushed metal,

Crash tests show how the car handles its own energy impaled on a stationary one, they do not show how a car reacts to a heavier stiffer framed object traveling in the opposite direction.
