NEWB needs help, paper clip trick?

I have done a lot of reading on here, and have learned a lot so far. I was reading another thread about cruise control not working, and how to check the stored codes. It gave some of the steps involved, but it was still a little vage, my guess is that both of these folks have more of a working knowledge of LCs than I do. I am very new to LCs and want to be darn sure what I am doing before I go sticking a paper clip into something electrical.
Would someone please post step by step instructions on how to get the codes from a 91?

Under your hood should be a diagram of the diagnose box and what pins to jumper with the paper clip.

My guess would be they both have Factory Repair Manuals. Got yours yet?
