Hello, may be one of you guys can help me out here. The threads have been really helpful but I am running out of ideas as to what to do with my curise control problem. I have 91 with 200k+ miles on it. The cruiser control does light up when you turn it on but it does not set. I read just about all the threads that talks about the cruiser control issue in this forum (couple of times up and down). :)
Here is what I have done so far.
1. Replaced stoplight switch
2. Cycled the actuator 8-10 times. Cleaned and looked inside. Looks clean.
3. Check the speed sensor by the transfer case. It looks clean but cleaned some more.
4. Check the brake fluid level switch and filled to make sure it is not it.
4. I did the dignostic with cruise control and it passes. No code.
5. I ran the test per instruction below.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
A. Turn the ignition switch on.
B. Turn the control switch to SET/Coast position, and keep it there.
C.Push the main switch ON.
D.check that the indicator light "CRUISE" lights-up in the
combination meter.
E.Turn the SET/Coast switch off
F.Meet the conditions listed in the table below.
G. Read the diagnostic code on the cruise control indicator light.
.................................................. ................
#1 Turn the control switch to SET/Coast position
there should be two flashes and then a second break and then two
flashes, then break then two flashes etc. If you get the flashes your
SET/Coast circuit is normal.
#2 Turn the control switch to RES/ACC possition.
this time you get a pause and three flashes, repeated again and
again. if you get the three flashes RES/ACC circuit is ok.
#3 Each switch is turned on
a. Control switch to CANCEL.
b. Stop light switch, (step on brake)
c. parking brake switch. ( pull up parking brake)
d.Neutral start switch. ( put in neutral)
if when you test each of the 4 cancel switches you DO NOT get any
flashes then those switchs are normal.
THIS IS YOU, And now you have to leave the driveway.
#4 Two parts for speed sensor
A. Drive at 25mph or below. if there are NO flashes sensor is normal.
b. Drive at 25mph or over. you should get constant steady blinking.
if she blinks sensor is ok.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

#1 passes. I get the two flashes followed by break.
#2 failes. I get five slow flashes and it turns itself off. I cannot not turn on the cruise control until I cycle the ignition. I have looked at all the code there is and this five slow flash is no where to be found.

What does #2 failure mean?:confused::confused:

Thanks in advance.
BTW, it started to rain. It is a light show outside with thunder and lightening. Seattle weather knows that kid's school is starting tomorrow. Nice...

My experience with this so far is identical...only thing I didnt see is whether or not you ran the diagnostic on the box under the hood before turning off the vehicle after you get the failure, then the five flashes and it turning off.

Do you have the FSM? If so, look on page BE-71 & 72.

Hello, I did run the dignostic test and there is no code given. It passes. It continuously blinks until you turn off the ignition which indicate normal condition.

>>4. I did the dignostic with cruise control and it passes. No code.

I do not have FSM and I am trying to get a copy. I have a Chilton repair manual which has section on the dignostic test for cruise control.

>>
DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTC)
If a malfunction occurs in the system during cruise control driving, the ECM cancels the cruise control, and blinks the CRUISE indicator light 5 times to inform the driver of a malfunction. At the same time, the malfunction is stored in the memory as a diagnostic trouble code.

Reading Codes
Turn the ignition switch ON.
Using SST 09843-18020 or an equivalent jumper wire, connect terminals TC and E1 of the DLC1. The DLC1 is located under the hood next to the fusebox.
Read the diagnostic trouble code on the CRUISE indicator light. Write the codes down and compare them to the chart.
Turn the ignition OFF.
Disconnect the jumper wire.
Clearing Codes
After completing repairs, the diagnostic code can be cleared by removing the ECM-B fuse for 10 seconds or more. Make sure the ignition switch is OFF. Check that the normal code is displayed after connecting the fuse.

Thanks.

Oh, sorry guys. I must been running diagnostic test when the code was cleared. This time I made sure the cruiser control failed in RES/ACC test then got the code off. Here is what I am getting during diagnostic test. The cruiser light blinks in following pattern.
Three short blinks --> short break --> one short blink --> long break
This repeats constantly. Is this mean 31??? The chart does not have code 31.

Thanks.

#2 failes. I get five slow flashes and it turns itself off.

Just a guess, but might work: Try pulling codes from the check connector box immediately after the #2 failure, leaving the key in the on position, etc.

The reason I say this is that according to the FSM, cruise control codes, unlike engine codes, are not stored indefinitely. For example, if you're driving along and your cruise control cuts out: a) the light should flash five times to notify you of a code, and then b) you need to pull the code before shutting off the vehicle.

Tada!

There ya go... :D

"Code 31: RESUME/ACCEL switch is ON always when MAIN switch is pushed ON."

Troubleshooting section then says to suspect (in order): 1) Control Switch; 2) Cruise control ECU.

Ahhh, thank you, CJF, for the reply. This gives me some new clues as to what I need to do next.

SMKCOMP - PM sent...

Thank you, guys. I will test the control switch per the troubleshooting instruction tonight. I will post the findings.
Thanks.

I am puzzled. After looking at the FSM for cruise control, I realized that I was not testing the RES/ACC properly. When it is tested properly, it passes the test.
I need to check and make sure why it is failing to set at any speeds between 25 to 70. Any ideas?
Sung

You got steady blinking from the light when driving over 25mph in diagnostics mode?

No, it does not. It does not blink constantly when I am driving over 25mph in diagnostic mode. I am finally understanding the troubleshooting chart. :) So my speed sensor may be bad. I will test it per instruction.
Thank you, CJF.

Ok so I ran these tests per the FSM and I am getting the same thing. Test 1 gives me 2 quick blinks, set/coast is good. Test 2 gives me the 5 slow flash with a 31 pulled off the diagnostic. and test 3 ...well I dont get test 3...light stays on when I pull the cancel switch and hit the button. And four...yeah whatever I drove under and over 25 and the light stayed on, but I am not sure I did it right. What ended being your issue smkcomp? Going across state this weekend and would love to have CC.

You're sounding more discouraged than ever...

If you're doing that test correctly, the light should be constant at/under 25mph, and blinking above 25mph. If not, points to a failed speed sensor, which is in fact the most common cruise control issue on a 91-92.

Curtis

and test 3 ...well I dont get test 3...light stays on when I pull the cancel switch and hit the button. .

Just looked at test #3, and you're right: It's pretty much indecipherable!

I can tell you that on my (working) system, I cannot get the light to come *on* by doing any of the things mentioned: control switch to cancel, brake pedal depressed, parking brake on, and/or tranny in park or neutral.

Curtis

Test 2 gives me the 5 slow flash with a 31 pulled off the diagnostic.

Ok, wait a minute: That's a FAIL, right? You saw the chart on page BE-72?

This is starting to make my head hurt...

Yeah it is. Diagnostic code gave me the 31 or "RESUME/ACCEL switch is ON always when MAIN swict is pushed ON".So according to BE-74 it is either my Control switch or my CC ECU. On BE-79 it says how to test the switch but I could not figure out how to get the switch out. ANd BE-87 was less than helpful in explaining how to remove the switch. So...guess I do kind of know what is wrong, just dont know how to prove it. :)

good luck guys, mine hasnt worked since i fixed the shorted out taillight where the PO has spliced in the trailer wiring, so it seems to me there is some type of resistance issue. if any of you find a good fix or way to override it let me know

Do the FSM diagnostics test; it's pretty cool.
