I just R&Rd my diaphragm and OH YEA what a difference it made!!:bounce:

I'm not sure how many have had similar results after swapping this part out, but for the money it had to be one of the best investments I've made so far.

I did the paperclip test (just do a search on "paperclip") and realized I wasn't getting any secondary action so I ordered the part from CDan.

The difference getting on the freeway was very noticable, and at about 75mph I started looking for 6th gear!

I havent rechecked it with the paperclip so maybe it's all in my head, but I don't think so.
So if your 60 hasnt had any carb work in......forever and seems really gutless (relatively speaking of course) this is a good place to start.

can you explain more about what you did and how much it cost?

Thanks

I've had opportunity to work on 4 or 5 60 carbs and all had a failed secondary. Seems the O-ring between the diaphram housing and the carb body disintegrates and/or is left out when someone has worked on the carb.

The vacuum secondary diaphragm is on tha driver's side of the carb. The diaphragm wears out and then the secondaries dont kick in and you have ALOT less power.
The part is under $20 including the gasket.

The 4 screws that hold on the housing are on the underside of the diaphragm assembly. 3 of the 4 are pretty easy to get to but one of them is a PITA. I got a small right angle ratcheting screwdriver at Sears for $10.00 to make access easier. Use the #2 phillips bit.

Once the housing is loose, use some tweezers to remove the small circlip that holds the actuating arm to the secondary linkage. Be CAREFUL TO KEEP A GOOD GRIP ON IT OR IT'LL LAUNCH INTO OBLIVIAN (don't ask me how I know). Remove the diaphragm and housing as well as the inner spring that goes between the diaphragm and the other half of the carb housing that remains attached to the carb. (way harder to explain that to do)

After you get the old one out clean the surface of the housing, permatex the gasket to the housing and then lightly permatex the new diaphragm to the gasket then allow it to dry. This will help hold them together to make it easier to reassemble. When I put the new stuff back in, I put the arm back on the linkage first when I reassembled it to keep it from moving around too much. Put the spring in the center of the diaphragm, compress the spring, and hold it down while you slip it all back together and center it back inside.

Put the screws back on and reattach the circlip and your're done.
