Hey Jody Welcome!

Got any pics of the new leather? Curious how that looks.

Ill take some soon. I will say that compared to factory toyota leather (that slick look) it is way better. This Shanes Leather Kit has very soft, more quality feel to it. It is a huge upgrade in my opinion.

uPDATE: Treadwright.com Guard Dog 285/75/16

Just wanted to post a pic of these new tires. Guard dog from treadwright. 285/75/16 fits perfect, no rubbing. These tires slice through water on pavement. They also clean out good in mud. I didnt even lock it in 4x4 and crawl through the thick slick stuff on. They roar, but not too much. Gas milage had slight decrease. Torsion bars are NOT raised in this pic. That prob will be my next move.

Tried to upload pic. No luck yet. Exceeds space limit it says

You should meet up with RTRLC and get him to go off road with you. He's in Birmingham. The 285s look great. Plastidipping those gold badges next?

Roll Tide.

Nice Dog Man!

I heard an awesome story on DC101 this morning about a German Shepherd named Samson protecting its masters. The discussion started about random door 2 door salesman to walking in your house and random strangers watching TV on their couch. This one caller said a guy in a hoodie came up late one night knocking on their door. The woman of the home answered, suspiciously peaking around the door. The hooded man asked if he could use the phone because his car had broke down. When she declined him and was closing the door, the guy he stuck his foot in the door! She then yelled, "Samson", who is their 90lb GSD who was in the basement. Samson runs around the house jumps a 5ft gate and starts chasing the guy, eventfully tearing his shirt off. The hooded guy runs and Samson sits on the front porch for an hour and a half and refuses to come in the house. cool story I thought....

But now to answer the Gold badge question. I think the weird guy in me somehow wants to keep them to make it look like I don't care..:p

The treadwright tires are on point! I took a nearly 2 inch piece of metal that was hanging out about a 1/8 of inch out with a pair of pliars, no flat. The mud dogs sing a little but off road they are damn good. haven't really had to lock in 4x4 drive much at all.

Jody, those tires look great and I've been considering them as well. Two questions:

1. Did you get the Kedge Grip?
  • No. The phone consultant told me unless I lived in a very wet areas it would wear the tires faster. (like Seattle, Wisconsin)
2. Did you get the D (8-ply) or E (10-ply) rated tires?
  • Not sure, here is my invoice info
  • 4 G2816D 285/75R16 GUARD DOG M/T D 124.00 Phone 496.00
  • 1 120.60 Phone 120.60 Freight Shipping and Delivery Fee - Fedex Home
  • 1 0.00 Phone 0.00
  • Notes **** This item is out of stock and will
  • Delivery
  • typically take 2-3 weeks for processing plus
  • shipping. ****
  • Total $616.60

Ok, so it looks like you got the D ratings which is what I'm leaning toward. I know the E rated are the same price, so it makes me think why not? But then again with 2 extra plies it MUST be heavier and I'm thinking the added carrying capacity just isn't necessary for my unloaded rig if I can avoid extra unsprung weight.

Now I'm just stuck between the all terrain or the guard dog... I know that it will wear faster but I'm really leaning toward the kedge grip since I do lots of trips to tahoe in the winter and there's either a bit of snow or water standing most of the winter... thanks for your input!

Guard Dog ...
I was calling them "Mud Dog"

Yeah man I am very please, I say for the money its a mega deal. I feel like they are high quality. the tread on the GD is apparently a slightly tighter version of the old GY Wrangler MT/R https://www.google.com/search?q=goo...ear-tires%2Fwrangler-mt-r-487486.html;600;400

I think the MT/R changed to different design whereas one side of the tire is different pattern than the other. there is video on youtube where a guy builds and test TLC's and they say they always go with a MT/R. On the hand, some south African overland guy that build TLC's has video where he swears by the BFG AT's. I think either way, these two tires types are a win either way. You wont be disappointed with Treadwright IMO.

I prefer D range for both improved flex and reduced weight. D is more than adequate for the vehicle weight as well. Treadwright in general seems to be developing a pretty strong following I've heard a lot more good than bad.
Welcome to the forum

It's not the weight rating that is needed as much as sidewall cut resistance. In general, E will be a more resilient sidewall.

I have a pair BBS 18's off a 2011 Tundra. I think I'll try the BFG AT clone from tread wright, Wardens I think they are called. My TLC is my daily 40 mile daily driver, and I believe the wardens will be adequate for 80% of my usage. However, during deer/duck season my Guard Dogs will prob need to be mounted. But who knows, the Warden may be good.

Ah great discovery, I knew that pattern looked familiar!

Both great point, tough decisions... ok [/HIJACK]

Jody, awesome rig, and since I didn't say it before, welcome from another new LC owner!

Thanks. That is a cool story. Today's her birthday. She's only 1 so she's still afraid of a lot of things but she still scared away creeps in the dark and can some how keep track of the 700 people in our office and barks at anyone who doesn't belong walking around.

I felt like changing my rear gold badges to gun metal made the rest end look newer. But it is kind of superficial.

I believe you have a new nickname, Mr. VanWinkle.

EDIT:

Call me stupid but I read it as: Nice, Dog Man!
As opposed to: Nice dog, man!

Nickname stays for me :p

Haha that made me do a double take too!

Factory Side/step boards

Factory Side/step boards....
They make my TLC look like it sits low due to factory suspension height. Should I remove these? Also, what is the standard thing to do with factory mudflaps? leave them on? replace?

The other thing that bugs me is the front end suspension slope. It looks as if my rig is jacked it the rear. I have to get serious and drop the cash on that 2.5" Old Man Emu lift one day. Our buddy on here, Kenny, has the sliver TLC that is nicely modded pictured with mine on this thread. He is full of great info on upgrades. And he has garage apparently where he works on his......
