New Turbo for LJ71

Hey everyone,

The turbo on my LJ71 just went. I'm looking at 800-1000 for it to be rebuilt. Does anyone know where I can get a new or used one? Or if there is a turbo off another vehicle that is possible to use.

Any advice would be much appreciated,

Try searching for a CT24 ( your factory Turbo ) on the internet .. ( eBay ? )

It just turned gutless. My mechanic was the one that told me it was busted. Either replace or rebuild.

adapter and run a garrett? It would probably run some $ maybe the same as rebuild.

Rebuilding these things isn't hard. The only thing that really have to be careful about is the balance. Mark everything and if your still worried rebuild it then take it and get the shaft balanced once you're done.

I've bought rebuild kits from gpopshop.com and they also seem reasonably priced for a rebuild.

Find a new mechanic. He gave a description for girl who doesn't know anything.

Busted cannot be a term for turbo's.

How abouts;
Condition of turbines? any leading edge damage?
Condition of play(axial) does it exceed manual specs?

Is the wastegate holding closed or are you bypassing the turbine all time?
Are the oil seals shot?


You may have a faulty wastegate or something else. But saying the turbo is busted it a dumb explanation from this mechanic..

If your turbo is cracked, blades destroyed and all worn out then maybe.

Thanks for all the info guys. If I find a new or used CT20 will it be a drop in replacement? No mods or anything like that?

A new one is probably 2500 ish. Rebuild is going to be 1k ish.

First of all call a turbo rebuild shop. Ask them how much to rebuild your turbo. Finding a CT20 might not be easy depending on your location.

I looked for a ct26, the bigger one used on the HD Land Cruisers. It was next to very difficult to get and the price was really smoking high. You can have a garrett built for 1/3 the price of a new Toyota turbo.
