New Troopy in Texas

After buying my '82 HJ47 almost 5 months ago, I finally got her home yesterday. Its a fairly basic troopy: 2H engine, 4-speed trans, and split t-case. No power steering, no a/c (not yet at least). I haven't figured out what the original color was but it is currently painted blue. There is some white/tan paint showing on the right side fender where it has been damaged. The body is in decent shape with only minor rust and a few dents here and there.

Initially I plan to swap in the disc front axle thats been sitting in my garage for 2 years. I'll freshen up the rear axle (brakes, gears, etc) and then throw on a 2.5" OME lift. Most likely Saginaw power steering and some form of a/c since it is 100+ degrees in Texas now. I hope to do all this in phases, as time and money allows, so that the truck is only down for a minimal amount of time.

That looks like an Aussie Troopy to me, being all right hand drive and such. Last time I checked they drive LHD vehicles in Panama but maybe it was imported to Panama first?

Or is that Panama City, Florida?

It is an Aussie troopy. Since Galveston isn't a major port for my shipping company, it was temporarily off-loaded in Manzanillo. It sat there for 3 weeks waiting for a feeder vessel that travels between Panama and Galveston every 10 days or so.

No dramas as far as Customs or picking it up. It took longer to walk across the lawn at Customs than to get the paperwork filled out and stamped. Really, the only drama so far is convincing the great State of Texas to issue me a title. Apparently, titling imported vehicles isn't something they do often so no one really knows what to do.

No more problems with the DMV. At first they wanted proof of ownership in the form of a signed over Aussie title. That document is difficult to get since they don't exist. After a few phone calls, they finally said they would issue me a title with the transfer of registration form that the seller filled out.

Post up some pics when you get it home.

Went to get it inspected today and it failed. When the brakes are applied, the light doesn't overpower the running lights. You can see it get brighter, but its very faint. I'm going to try new bulbs and hope that works.

Minor problem. Check the bulbs and clean the bulb sockets most likely poor connections. Not uncommon.

congrats on bringing it in! hope you get the dmv stuff figured out. the tail lights should be an easy fix.


i'm in the middle of a troopie build for a custoer right now. we're doing a scout ps conversion on it due to clearance issues around the turbo. if you stay with the RHD, then it'll be easy to do a sag conversion. you can use the same ps plate kit ( pm me if you need one ) along with the box from a chevy 4wd pickup. if you plan on running ac, then you'll want to mount the ps pump in the stock location; on the low right side of the engine. the AC mounts on the left high side.


looking forward to seeing the progress. do you plan on bringing the rig to katemcy in 09? i'll be there for sure, but this time i won't have my troopie with me.

Checked the bulbs last night and they were covered in dirt which wasn't helping my cause. I eventually found out that a brake and tail light wire on the left side was crossed. I was burning the wrong filament when the brake was being applied. I swapped the wires, took it back this morning, and got my sticker. Now on to the DMV to get it titled and registered.

We'll have to see about Katemcy '09. There's no telling where this thing is going to take me.

I had actually forgotten about that. Is that what the on/off switch on the dash is for? Not sure I even know what to look for.
