Just got back from 3 nights of camping with the 4runner. Little update.
I put a cheapo ebay intake on it a few months ago and the report is its a lot louder with no noticeable gains until you hit the freeway. Definitely a big difference when the truck is loaded to the roof with stuff. I'm able to pull Blackwell Hill in 5th at 65mph. Whereas before I was in 4th doing 55mph.

Speaking of loaded with stuff I may need some airbags for the back on big trips....

We hit Siskiyou Lake outside of Shasta City with the kids which they loved! Nice little campground and the lake was awesome. I have pics of it on another camera but I highly recommend it for some low key kid friendly camping. Nice beach, 10mph lake with a huge water park area for the kids. Also noteable was the fact that there was a place to get beers 50 yards up the beach and you could drink them on the beach. After that we hit all backroads to the coast and it was gorgeous until we heard the banjo's fire up in Cecilville. I wouldn't recommend going there unless you're packin'!
Found some snow to wheel on!

A mining claim with a gigantic water hole.

This little stretch was off Hwy 96 called Bald Hill Rd. Very pretty area and a nice direct route to the coast instead of going all the way down to Eureka.

4runner did great, averaged 18 MPG. Tore a front CV boot at some point. Not sure if its salvageable or not yet. Desperately needs new shocks to put up with the excessive loads placed on it. It floated down the road really bad. Fun trip though. We had some projectile vomitting out the rear window due to a car sick kid and one of the twisti-est roads I've ever been on called Callahan/Cecilville Road. We tried to find a camping spot on the coast only to have everything full due to 4th of July camping. We ended up in an RV park the last day. Good times!

talk about loaded to the gills.
damn kid.

looks like some good times, great pics.

i agree with you on the intake. i may swap my paper filter out for a k&n.

The Callahan Cecilville road is the road I take to work...... HAhahaha! :D

 You work??! :flipoff2:

The whole mileage thing makes me wonder if I'd be better off with a Runner like your's Jesse. We could get around a lot better on 18mpg than 10!:D

I really like my cruiser though. :frown:

Jesse- did you have a spot reserved or is it first come.....first served?

Were you the one playing the banjo? If you drove that road 10 times in a row your chance of getting in an accident is like 1000%! Do you go all the way to 96 on it or do you stop somewhere in there?

You can definitely reserve. It would be really crowded on a weekend for sure. They do have 350 sites though, 200 of those are for camping. You could also go for the day if you wanted. Look here

Jesse, I got the tent for the back of your rig. Will drop it off at our next spirit running exchange or if your out this way you can just come by and grab it.

Its been forever since I've done any updates on the runner. I removed the FZJ80 rear lift springs from it and installed some medium OME springs which made it ride a lot better and it doesn't sag with all the weight we put on this thing when camping. I don't run any sway bars front or rear so the additional stiffness in the rear end helps cornering too.
Last week we went camping up at Howard Prairie and I opted not to take the 4runner due to its perpetually bad brakes. The rotors were heavily warped when we got it and with the loads we put on it we weren't helping the cause. I read up on the brakes and it seems they were under equipped from the factory and just replacing the rotors was only a temporary solution at best. Anyway Tundra rotors and calipers are a bolt on upgrade and are much thicker than the 4runner rotors albeit they are the same diameter. So after shelling out some well earned birthday money I had a pile of parts and after an hour install my brakes are top notch! Now about those rear drums....
4runner vs Tundra. I figured I gained about 3/16 of thickness which translates to no more brake vibrations!

Old caliper vs new. Really the only change that I can see is a much wider valley in between the two sides.

All bettah! Probably should've put some paint on the new calipers in hindsight. Oh well.

Definitely a lot more steel on those Tundra rotors. :)

Couple challenges came down the road lately... the first was that we had a couple long trips with the kids over the summer. We had done a test run to Portland with them sharing the backseat and by the end we were miserable and they pissed and moaned about not having enough space. Anyway, I had found a aftermarket 3rd row seat on Craigslist a couple months prior and finally got around to installing it for one of our big trips to my cousin's wedding. It worked splendidly. Only welded a couple nuts on the floor and cut some very small holes in the carpet. I can pull it out in about 5 minutes, the kids love it and I avoided having to buy a mini-van!

Secondly I have been eyeballing tires lately but I hate spending money on new tires. My $120 Craigslist Nitto 33's were getting low on tread after a couple years of use and didn't really provide the traction I wanted off-road, especially with the upcoming snow season. So, on my new-to-me Pig I have sitting in my driveway is a almost brand new set of 33/12.50/15's Les Schwab special AT's...However my 4runner supposedly only takes 16's and up. I got to eyeballing them...then got to drinking beer....then I busted out the grinder....then I got to drinking more beer....Needless to say they fit with a surprisingly small amount of grinding on the caliper. I believe these are an 8" rim but I bet I could fit 15's on a stock 60 rim with almost no grinding. I'm also running wheel spacers which helps too. SUCCESS!!
And before anyone lectures me about grinding on calipers... I'm a professional, don't try this at home, its been safely done before, don't ride in my rig, I took the necessary precautions, don't care, yadda yadda yadda.
