Hello all,

I've been a longtime cruiserhead and with a baby on the way I sold my FJ cruiser to start the hunt for something with 4 doors. We drove 4runners and a couple GX470s and decided the GX was just too plush to pass up. I hope that luxury doesnt come back to bite us in the ass.

Looked for about 3 weeks and found a local, 2004 GX470 in a Pearl white color. Non-nav, non-KDSS, 1 owner, 180k miles, almost friggn' spotless - though my frame of reference is different than most.

Just had timing belt/waterpump, new brake booster/ABS/hydro unit, new front pads/rotors, new radiator, new dash, plugs, trans flush, two O2 sensors, and 4 TPMS sensors. The owner sold it to a local shop after all that work was done because she didn't trust it anymore... seems like she could have saved some money if she stopped trusting it before fixing all that stuff! Total bill was about $6000. I picked it up for 11k so I felt ok about the deal.

Only issue is a crack in the DS mirror, a leaking 4wd actuator O-ring, and an intermittent CEL for catalyst below efficiency.

Brought it home and changed FR/RR diff fluid, Trasnfer case fluid, and PS fluid. Oil change and filter is next and then have the old girl detailed.

Plans are to use the GX for family/dog hauling on longer trips and repair whatever needs repairing for the first 6 months/year. Hopefully the airbags will hold out for another year at which point I would like to do a coil swap with a very mild ~2" lift. These things look like minivans in stock trim.

My old lady is very happy with the purchase. Seems that she thinks this is HER vehicle? It didn't feel like her vehicle when I was crawling around underneath it for 6 hours last night...

The White Trash (80 series) is sizing up the new addition. I always think 80s are big... until they are side-by-side with a newer vehicle. Nevermind the weeds in the driveway!!

I was reading @co4wheel build thread and really dig the height he ended up with. I've read other places that the 5100s and Eibach 620# spring might be a bit soft up front. Other options to consider? Definitely not looking to go over a 2" lift and I don't need coilovers.

What are my options for a rear coil that gives 1-1.5" over stock height and a fairly sporty ride? The Metaltech site is not very helpful... When you guys are shopping around are you looking at fj cruiser/4runner stuff or are there sites geared toward the GX? I couldn't find anytthing on Toytecs site.

Looks clean, almost identical to what I started with

Most of the time for suspension its just mix and matching fjc and 4th gen parts when shopping online, although many vendors are now starting to catch onto the GX craze. Toytec is super helpful over the phone if you're curious about their options.

Cheers!

Had a p0420 the other night. Cleared the code, filled the tank all the way up and added two small bottles of Techron and drove around for about 60 miles today. No CEL. We'll see how long until it comes back.

Goal is to drive this old girl 6 hours to the beach this weekend. Im hoping some road time is all she needs. It's only had <5000 miles put on it in the last year. Probably all around town.

Tonight I cleaned the throttle body and the MAF sensor, Continued flushing the PS fluid with the suck-it-out-of-the-reservoir method, and changed the oil. I also had the tires balanced/rotated. This thing is starting to drive civilized!

I noticed this little coolant residue? Doesn't look like it's leaking currently. Maybe from a past repair? Removal of the throttle body?

And I had a chance to try the GX out in her natural habitat. There was an escalade pickup to my left. I fit right in!

She specifically said "I like the running boards!"

She is in love with this vehicle. Which sucks because so am I. Guess I'll have to get another!

Congrats on the gx

Sounds like my wife. We (actually 'I', she never even saw it before I brought it home) just got a 2005 GX a few months ago (silver, grey interior, 139k miles, in great condition)...I haven't done anything to it, other than drive the crap out of it, 10k miles in 3 months, eeek...My wife loves it though, mostly because it's higher/taller/seemingly-more-safe than her car (IS350). Everytime we go anywhere in it she's like "I'm really glad we got it"...notice her use of 'we'...
