Hi, I introduced myself in one of the Arizona sub-forums here....(https://forum.ih8mud.com/az-copper-state-cruisers/12245-introduce-yourself-45.html#post5630859) and I have a few questions about upgrading the wheels and tires on my 2009 LC. Hoping I came to the right place for some good advice.

I'm running the stock Toyota LC 18" wheels with 285/60 R18 Michelin Latitudes. I am looking at the Black Rhino Sidewinder wheels (18x9)...

Spoke to someone at Discount Tire today who said that even though the Discount Tire website does not show these wheels as fitting my vehicle they should still fit. There is a 12 offset and he mentioned that the "grease cap" may have to be removed. So I have a few questions since I'm not very knowledgeable on wheels, fitments, etc....

1. Does this 12 offset mean the wheels will stick out excessively (e.g. past the mud guards or outside the fender flares)?
2. Will this wheel fit and be a good option for my 2009 LC? I had assumed any 18" wheel that has the Toyota bolt pattern (5-150?) would be fine.

On these wheels I am planning to put some all terrain tires and leaning towards the Nitto Terra Grapplers. I'm considering the 285/65 R18 size tires. My understanding is that this is slightly larger (about 1" in diameter) than the 285/60 R18 tires that come stock. Questions:

1. It seems like these tires will actually give my truck a very small lift (less than 1") without even putting a lift on the vehicle. Will this slight increase in tire size cause any problems with the tire hitting the inside wheel well?
2. Will changing the wheels and tires affect the ability of the suspension, the KDSS, Crawl control, or any other functions of the LC? Will I lose and screw up any of the capabilities of the vehicle by doing this, or worse, void my warranty? Will I need to adjust the speedometer or odometer because of the wheel/tire change?

Again, appreciate any help or advice I can get. I'm definitely a newb when it comes to this stuff and hope I'm not asking any dumb questions. Just looking to get this fine vehicle ready to do what it was built for and have a little offroading fun!

Yikes! More than 50 views and not one response? Has anyone upgraded their 200-series wheels and could offer some advice or perspective?

Did I put this in the wrong place? Is there sub-forum or area more focused on wheels/tires regardless of vehicle?

Thanks.

You put this in the right place. The problem is there aren't many on this board with a 200 and most of those who have are running some variant of Toyota wheels. Since the guy at discount tire said that the grease cap would have to be removed I would run away from him and these wheels. You will have better luck finding the answer to you question at Tundra Solutions. They have the same bolt pattern, off set, etc. as your 200. I don't know much about that site but I would ask in the main Tundra forum. Good luck.

You can probably run these, but they are far less than ideal. The +12 offset will stick out quite a bit, IMO way to much. Being that Toyota is only manufacturer using the 5 x 150, these would likely be "drilled" for the Tundra, probably from a universal casting meant to cover many apps. IMO look for a wheel with an offet of at least +30, preferably more.

Got it. The +12 does seem like a risk and they might stick out past the edge of the mud flaps or the body of the vehicle. The closest thing I can find to the wheels I like (pictured above) with a better offset are the XD Series Hoss. They have the following specs...

Front and Rear

Size: 18x9
Offset: 30mm
Backspacing: 6.18"
Bolt Pattern: 5-150
Rec. Tire Size: 285/60-18
Weight: 31.0lbs.
Finish: Black Painted
Construction: 1 Pc.
Manufactured in China

Do you see a problem running these? And I assume that going to a 285/65-18 tire would be okay, right?

I think they look good on this Jeep!

Thanks!

fake bead locks AND it is made in China?

even a Jeep deserves better.

I would recommend buying the TRD wheels for your 200 if you're hell bent on new wheels. They are forged aluminium and very strong and lite. The 80 series uses the same material and manufacturing process and they have held up well over 17 years. Another plus, being 17" wheels, there are more tire choices. These would be direct bolt on, designed for you car wheels. If you decide to go this route I strongly recommend ordering from Dan Busey, cruiserdan on this board. He is manager for the parts department at American Toyota in Albuquerque and is THE go to guy for parts on this board. Incredibly knowledgeable, great to do business with and gives us Mudders a sizable discount. His number is 800-432-6668.

Oh, and whatever wheels you go with, remember to order five.

Cool, I'll take a look. And, definitely ordering 5 wheel/tire combo's.

Can you point me to a website that shows the available TRD wheels? Thx.

I don't see many TRD options, particularly in 18" and black. I may go with an XD Series wheel (either the one pictured or something better).

Does a +30 offset seem okay? Do you think the wheels will stick out past the mud flaps?

The only Toyota wheel in 18" is the one you've already got. The TRD wheels are 17", which is better for offroading (less possibility of damage and you can deflate further).

I still have my stock 18" wheels as do most of us on this board (except the few running the TRDs). Very few run another wheel as when we got them in '08, there weren't really any 5-150 options.

I agree with mark71 -- I hate fake. Those wheels are designed to replicated beadlocks, but they are not beadlocks.

Don't waste your money on ghetto rims. If you want to wheel the vehicle, either stay with the 18's, get the 17" TRDs or spring for these: https://forum.ih8mud.com/200-series-cruisers/317842-wheels.html True beadlocks and a damn sexy wheel.

...and please don't put stupid 20's or 22's on an LC...not that you would anyways

On the tire note, the 285/65R18 is only 1.1" taller than the 285/60R18. To calculate "tire lift" you need to divide that figure by two as only the radius "lifts" your vehicle. Therefore, you really only get a .5" lift with a 1" taller tire.

The 275/70R18 is 1.7" taller and only a .25" narrower (that's what I went with). Get's me into 33" territory :)

At Sherpa Off-Road Outfitters we sell TRD products and can get you the 17" TRD Forged Off-Road Wheels for your 200! You can check them out here: TRD 17" Forged Off-Road Wheels - Sherpa Off Road Outfitters, LLC Store

If you have any questions feel free to contact me directly at zane@sherpaoffroad.com or shoot me PM and I would be happy to assist.

Best,

Zane

Thanks Zane. If I go with the 17" TRDs I'll contact you.

Great info, JB. I'm definitely not upgrading my wheels for a ghetto look. I want to stay at 18" or less and I simply like the look of a black wheel, a matte black not a glossy. You're right, options have been difficult to come by in 5-150 but the bigger challenge for me has been the offset. I don't want the wheels sticking out too much so I'm trying to stay with something +25 or higher, preferably a +35 if I go from my current 18x8 to a more common 18x9 wheel.

The 275/70/18 route is interesting to me. I see you have a 2" lift. Do you have any issues with tires rubbing in the front (or rear) inside wheel well? Would you have issues if you didn't do the lift? I know a 285/65/18 (32.6" tire diameter) will work, apparently just barely, even if I don't lift my LC right away.

Those Rock Monsters with beadlocks are awesome! That might be a little overkill for my situation though as I'm just getting into recreational offroading. Every wheel search I do inevitably yields XD Series wheels which are okay, but again, the ones I like don't have the offset I'd want to keep the wheels tucked in a little closer to the body. What do you think Ultra Wheels, if you're familiar with them? These (Ultra Wheel) come in 18x9 with 5-150 and +35 offset.

Appreciate the help here. I'm learning a lot as I go and want to make the right decision on some AT tires and associated wheels that will still serve me and the family well on highways and local driving. Thanks again.
