We been looking here and there for LX/LC in the past several years. I think starting last summer when I started looking a bit more seriously and actively browsing CL and other sites almost every weekend, and started to think I should be willing to travel long distance to find one that is in decent shape.

Very late last Saturday, I saw a new CL ad for green 98 LC 207K miles with nav. The car was located 3 hr away. I called the owner Sunday morning right before church, and ask if I can stop by to look in the afternoon. She said that there are 3 people who had contacted her immediately after she put up the ad on Saturday experessing interest. I was thinking I better start driving otherwise this LC is going to be gone. I have missed out on about 5 LC/LX that I just could not get there fast enough to see and buy. So I was driving there in the afternoon, she texted me, and said two people had offered to purchase, sight unseen. She wanted to confirm I am still coming. Texted her back, that we are still 90 miles away, but definitely coming. I started driving faster at that point lol.

Looked at the car in pouring rain and as it started to get dark outside, so really not ideal time to look at a car. The owner was super nice, both were very upfront to us regarding the car, even pointing things to us in the rain. Test drove real quick. Interior was very clean, exterior had some scratch, ding, nothing major that would stop me from buying it. It had some rust bubble on top of the windshield which I am going to deal with asap. Underneath was clean with very minimal surface rust in some suspension components.

Gave her a downpayment that evening to assure her that we are buying this, and told her we will return on Friday with the rest of the money. She is buying a new car, so she was motivated to sell the LC.

Took a day off yesterday, drove there to pick her up. I am super excited now that I am now LC owner! Really enjoyed driving back in the LC. The ad mentioned it has a nav, so I was thinking some old 1998 factory nav. What a surprise it has an Alpine S920, and from listening on the music, sounded like the previous owner replaced all speakers. It sounded really great.

Car just had oil change and new wipers, so I will leave those alone, but will flush every fluid just so I know its been done. Going to do some reading on how to's.

Going to get rear-view camera for the Alpine HU. Any suggestion for the best bang for the buck? Not necessarily the best most expensive one. Just something to help my wife backing up the car.

I saw Hilux and unknown buggy on the drive back home, very cool.... Sorry for the crappy picture, was trying to take a pic and not crash my new car haha!

Congrats. I love that green when it catches the sun!

I'll be looking for you about...

Hi-lux.... just got back from GA, seen lots of non-rusty 80's angulars- Yum!

Congrats on the new purchase!

As far as rear view cameras go, get the Alpine one. I'm on my third camera - the first two were Pioneers - and the Alpine has worked admirably.

Congrats! Must have been a great deal if two offers to buy at full price came in sight unseen? Or was that a sales tactic used by the seller to get you to buy? I'm guessing it must have been between $5K - $7K for it to go that quick?

Thanks guys!

@tabraha - agree. I havent wash or wax it, but paint is still shiny and beautiful for an old car. Overall, in much better condition now that I actually manage to see it during daylight. I did find some other small ding/scratch that I didnt see that night, but would have still bought it, so no regret. Definitely lesson learned not to inspect the car at night and in the rain.
@Number6 - just let me know ;)
@RND1 - I thought about that too. It was offered at $6.5K, but the owner said she got two offer with sight unseen for $6K. She told us she wanted to close the deal that week, I was like me too - I was afraid she would change her mind haha... After we bought it, we find out that she had a Lexus waiting for her at local dealer, so she was motivated to pay off her loan. It will need TB/WP soon, so as far as I am concerned, its $7K.
@SmoothLC - will check out Alpine camera

Sounds like you did well - $6K for a 100 is pretty darn cheap! Get the TB/WP done and baseline it and you're good to go for many thousands of miles. Take care of the rust on the windshield though - one thing with rust there's always more where you can't see. The windshield was probably replaced in the past and not done correctly.

I been slowly working on the car. I notice that it is missing covers for battery terminals. Any idea where I can find covers that would fit, especially the positive post (I am taking someone else picture here). I checked with local part stores, they dont have anything that is that wide.

@iwashmycar I will check local store when I get home (out of town now), but it may not work. My LC has a fuse box that is hooked up to the battery, so its not just a cable - see picture below. Dealer is kinda my last resort because they are not close by. I am again borrowing someone's else picture here.

@ n55luvr @iwashmycar - thanks!

So I was reading this thread - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/cooling-a-vvti-motor.854863/. 1998 maybe should or should not have a condenser fan. So I went out at lunch to look at the car, and mine do not have a condenser fan. No signs that a fan was removed that I can see. Ok, no biggie, I can get a fan installed if needed. Cant be that bad, have done it on a different car.

But then I notice I do not see any plug or harness to plug the fan. Now looking at everything under the hood, I see 4 unplug harness. 3 on passanger side, 1 on driver side. Did someone un-plug my supercharger? Seriously though, what are these for? The missing condenser fan?

I do not see check engine light or other warning lights. Car drives fine, so this is baffling.

This LC is full of surprise ;)
Chris
