1973 FJ40. Work in progress. Currently 305 chevy, 3 speed toyota. 4 inch lift on 35s. Lockers front & back. 4 disc brakes. Plans are 383 with sm420 transmission. Its just for fun, won't ever be a clean show truck.

Nice looking 40! The 383 and the SM420 will make for a nice drivetrain considering the 35'' tires. My 73 has a 350 with an SM 420 and it works well for me.

Welcome to the site, there are some very knowledgeable people here that can help you out with any aspect of your rig. They have helped me greatly with my project when I've had questions.

Welcome, and you have a great looking 40. In the photo posted above, has the engine already been removed? I ask because that front shackle angle is negative, which is definitely not an ideal setup. 40's ride rough, but improper shackle angle can make it way worse!

Motor still in it. This was just a week after the lift was installed. Hopefully some settling will help the angle.

Thanks for the welcome. I was wondering if you are using a plate adapter between the sm420 and transfer case or the advanced adapter? If you are using a plate adapter do you know where a guy could find one?

I wish I could help you with that, The conversion on mine was done a number of years ago by another owner and I have had no need to take it apart since I've owned it so I don't know which was used or a source for the part you want.

You should put a wanted ad in the classified section. They have become fairly rare. The 420 hasn't been made for over 50yrs. Many many yrs ago there were several members, who had plate adapters made up and sold them. Iirc, Spaceghost was one of the members. I run a 420 in one of my 40's, but gave up on offset rear output tcases for this 40 a long time ago
