Okay, so after many sets of all terrains and many, many months of FAQ ,threads, and search (combined with local scouting) I decided to be a little different and purchased/mounted a full set of 5 new 255/85/16 BFG MT's.
Not too many of you run these tires and although I did find some real data, I found a lot more of "opinionated" views on a lot of other tires/attitudes. That aspect, because it was not data on this specific tire, actually helped in forming my own opinion. But I have to say, the most valuable info I gathered came from Expeditions West. Not only the hard data Scott reported from these tires and wear on his Tacoma, but from the detailed article, 'Tire Selection for Expedition Travel: The impact of tire width on traction'.
Let me say, that I do not propose that this is "the" superior tire or that this tire is "best" for all applications. I do believe that for my needs this is the "best" tire. I actually think it is a great choice for a lot of us.
Anyway, my first few observations:

1. The ride height has slightly increased. If you will notice, on a below linked picture, I documented the ride height increase. I marked the garage wall w/ a Sharpie at the top of the fairlead tab before the tire install, then after. There was an inch and change increase.
2. The 80 handles much better compared to the 285/75. It feels more nimble, not tippy and nausiating, but spry.
3. Combined with the handling is the ease of steering. There is less rubber to move on the ground, so the steering wheel is much lighter. A lot less effort to manuver in confined areas and on surface streets.
4. Being my first set of mud terrains, I expected a little road noise. Maybe it's because the interior of the 80 is so comfortable, but I do not notice a difference. There is no noticable road noise from the tires. I am very happy.

Just thought I'd share my opinions on what is somewhat of a unique size. But, they are BFG's, they are mud terrains, and they are 33"+!!

WOW! Never woulda thunk it...

WOW! Never woulda thunk it...

No kidding, I was shocked!! And if you notice, the Bridgestones have plenty of tread. There are practically new. The difference is incredible.

Just measured. The tire is compressed a bit, parked in my driveway which is slight incline, but the board hit the tape right at 33 1/4". I will get a true measurement tomorrow on flat.

It definately looks good, I'm now thinking some 34x10.50s will be my next multi-use tire.

P.S. There is a huge bonus to this tire I have not yet mentioned. No matter where you look, you will find that this is a far less expensive tire than most and that you can get a great deal because it is not a common tire. It is almost considered a light utility tire in some tire shops eyes, i.e., not that desireable. I got a great deal on my set of 5.

I love the tires!!! Great Find... I think I am going to get me some.. maybe a little wider though!! thanks....

They look perfect on your rig - and you have the best color 80 too.;)

Can these be run with stock suspension?

You put them on stock wheels? Wondering if the 8" wheel is a bit wide for these.

I'm thinking I may go this route as well. I like pizza cutters...

Thank you SO much for posting this. I have been looking and looking for a good 'pizza cutter' tire for my next purchase, and that they are taller than my 285's is awesome.

Can you tell me if there are any other tires that fit the bill that you considered? (skinny tall tires?)

I had those on my FJ55 and 60 and loved them. They last forever and were not that loud IMO. I can't remember if they were D or E rated but you could pump them up to 80psi. I will be putting them on my 80 when I wear out they current tires.

FWIW: Around the same size (Ø) as a 295, but a 1.5" narrower.

Anyone notice any mpg changes with these vs. 285 vs. stock?

FWIW, I was considering these, but just was not sure on the OD with my stock standing rig. They should also be narrower than the typical tire. I slightly regret not purchasing these, as this is not my DD. I instead purchased the Truxus MT. I have been thrilled with my Truxus, but a different discussion for a different thread.

Notice the LTB's are bias ply.

Jordan, the tires look great on your rig and I think that you will be pleased with them.
